ABOUT US

PVAMU Extension: Wellness in Houston is a partnership with the Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M University, and Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities Initiative.

Wellness in Houston comprises of five of PVAMU’s colleges that work collaboratively to curate programming: the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, the College of Nursing, the College of Juvenile Justice, the College of Business, and the School of Public and Allied Health. 

OUR MISSON

Improve the quality of life in Greater Houston communities, through health, nutrition, and wellness education and programming.

OUR GOALS

Expand awareness of nutritional and health services available to families.

Improve healthy self-care practices through screenings, assessments and referrals.

Provide workshops and educational opportunities focused on positive parenting and family support.

Increase access to healthy foods.

OUR OBJECTIVE

Encourage families and individuals to adopt and adapt to healthy lifestyle choices through outreach, assessments, and non-formal educational programs. Our programs are designed to bring awareness about healthy-living practices and health-services available to community residents.

Through our education workshops, residents learn how food has a direct impact on health, how to prevent and control disease, and how to enhance family resource management.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Over 100,000 individuals contacted through our evidence-based research curriculum programs, workshops, program planning, and volunteering.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

Developed more than 205 new partnerships with local organizations within the greater Houston area. Community partnerships include other local universities, hospital systems, independent school districts, faith-based organizations and more.

ADDRESSING HEALTHCARE CHALLENGES

Over 1,500 vaccines administered and over 40,000 preventive healthcare screenings provided in Harris county.
