PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Houston’s ABC13 visited the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences to interview Endowed Professor Ali Fares, Ph.D., about the crop growth outlook for the 2023 harvesting year. Dr. Fares also provided the same expertise last July as farmers across the state dealt with the aftermath of a severe drought in 2022. At that time, the station interviewed a pair of Prairie View farmers who experienced a total loss during the last harvest season, as it was one of the driest years on record. Last week Dr. Fares gave his insight again into what this year will look like.

The good news, according to him, is that there seems to be some improvement in rainfall which has been helpful for farmers. Corn planting reached 52% this year, up two percent from 2022. Dr. Fares says he is optimistic for the future, but as the climate continues to change, he believes it is our responsibility to adapt to survive drastic changes in the future.
