The College of Agriculture and Human Sciences Student Led Garden Club had a busy harvest the past semester. Their efforts to grow their own produce and share with their community have positively impacted the surrounding areas of the university. Recently, they harvested vegetables growing in the garden around campus and gave them away to students and community members. Led by club advisors Laura Carson, Ph.D., and Richard Griffin, Ph.D., the Student Garden Club was fortunate to have a big enough harvest this season that permitted them to share the food with not only students but, with the help of Ms. Chandra Adams, they were able to donate produce to the local citizens in the community as well.
They harvested on two separate days and distributed the produce to the students on day one. Approximately 15 students came out and supported the giveaway, taking as much produce as they pleased. The produce provided from the garden included kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, collard greens, radishes, and parsley.
The second harvest was on December 15th, when they donated the produce to the community. About 10 families received vegetables through donations.
The group is determined to bring awareness to the urban gardening movement and promote their future endeavors to expand urban gardening. In October, the club also planted eight garden beds of produce and herbs at First United Methodist Church of Prairie View for the community to use and feed their families. The group desires to attract more support to keep up with its mission.
