Everyone knows that November signals various beginnings and signs of change, like Fall weather, leaves changing colors, colder temperatures, and the fight against the flu. At first sight, the accompanying picture with this report may make you think the eight congregants of Paradise Missionary Baptist Church (PMBC) in South Dallas are geared up for safety from the flu or the dreaded Covid-19 virus. Although they are armored against the flu and Covid-19, they are also gearing up against foodborne illness and cross-contamination.

On November 16, 2022, First Lady and PVAMU-CEP Advisory Committee Member (Ms. Yolanda Nolan) summoned seven PMBC congregation leaders to listen as the Family & Community Health Agent (Marvin Young) delivered a presentation entitled “Keeping Your Food Safe for You and Your Family.”

Young shared information on the following food safety tips:

  • Signs and Symptoms of foodborne illness
  • Keeping Your Food Safe at Home & While Shopping
  • Four critical behaviors for keeping food safe (clean, separate, cook, and chill), and
  • Freezer and refrigerator food storage times

Each of the eight participants left with a heightened awareness of keeping their families safer, a handout to keep and share with family and friends this Fall, and one lucky participant won the grand door prize of a 24-pound holiday turkey.
