On Saturday, August 13, 2022, Prairie View A&M University’s Wellness in Houston project participated in Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Back to School Festival at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Residents throughout the city poured into the convention center as early as 8 a.m. to receive free backpacks and school supplies from the mayor’s office and local organizations.

We were able to engage with more than 2,500 families and provide nutrition education resources for parents preparing to send their kids back to school at the PVAMU Wellness in Houston booth. We also offered a fun bean bag toss activity for kids who stopped by our booth. We gave away more than 200 lunch boxes, 300 pencils, 100 notebooks, and 50 lanyards and water bottles. The event was a huge success, and we were honored to be able to participate and positively impact 25,000 students and their families.
