April 26 – The Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) continues to meet the nutritional education needs of limited resource families during the COVID-19 pandemic. EFNEP provides nutrition education through virtual classes with schools, churches, Harris County housing projects, and healthcare facilities.

During Spring Break, EFNEP Nutrition Education Associate Krystal Wilcox conducted nutrition classes with Girls Inc. of Greater Houston. The group’s motto is, “Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.” Wilcox energetically educated 25 youth using the Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness curriculum developed by Cornell University.

EFNEP Nutrition Associate Sylvia Gonzalez and Family and Community Health Agent Alfredo Alberto began at the Walking with a Doc Community Program.

“The girls really enjoyed the program. They were very excited when it was time for each session to begin,” Wilcox said. “They were attentive and asked a lot of questions. During the food demonstrations, the young ladies were creative in which sometimes they added their twist to the recipes.”

In March, EFNEP Nutrition Associate Sylvia Gonzalez and Family and Community Health Agent Alfredo Alberto began a program with the Memorial Hermann Walking with a Doc Community Program.

EFNEP Nutrition Associate Sylvia Gonzalez and Family and Community Health Agent, Alfredo Alberto began at the “Walking with a Doc” Community Program.

Walking with a Doc is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle to improve the overall health and well-being of the community.

The class meets each Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Bethel Baptist Church for Zumba class. After finishing their Zumba class, the participants grab their lawn chairs, mats or sit on the ground to learn about healthy food recipes, food safety, and the importance of staying active. Gonzalez’s energetic and positive attitude in conducting the classes has increased weekly class attendance.
