December 7 – With the pandemic altering traditional learning methods, the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Cooperative Extension Program 4-H and Youth Development group has implemented the virtual 4-H At-Home Gardening Series to bring fun, educational activities, and curriculum to kids of all ages.

This fall, nearly 230 youth from the ages of eight-13 participated in the virtual program. The program is self-paced and allows underserved youth to participate in gardening projects safely from the comfort of their homes.

“We want people to know that gardening can be done anywhere, no matter the location or space,” Bexar County Cooperative Extension Agent Sayako Seymour said.

The series consisted of six video lessons with hands-on activities to go along with each lesson. Each youth participant received a free gardening supply kit consisting of test tube hydroponics, container gardening, a do-it-yourself greenhouse, plant person, recycling gardening, and do-it-yourself bird feeders. The participants received a certificate after completing the series.

The 4-H At-Home Garden Series was funded by the FOURWARD Grant through the National 4-H organization.
