Emergency Management Faculty Development Workshop

Prairie View A&M University’s College of Business in collaboration with the College of Juvenile Justice, hosted a two-day workshop on April 19-20, 2023, for faculty members at colleges and universities and practitioners in the field of disaster management and relief operations. The workshop was supported with funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

The goals of the workshop included: (i) Understanding the challenges and opportunities of developing and sustaining Academic Programs in Emergency Management; (ii) Preparing students to successfully navigate an Emergency Management career; (iii) Understanding the importance of Social Media Analytics, their Values and Use in Emergency Management for Various Communities; (iv) Discussing data analytics and their potential importance in Emergency Management academic programs; (v) Drawing Awareness on Academic Programs in Emergency Management; and (vi) Engaging the local community in time of crisis.

Throughout the two-day event, the over forty attendees heard from emergency management education experts and practitioners from Texas A&M University, University of Oklahoma, Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, North Carolina Central University, and Savannah State University. The program was enriched by two expert panel discussions on the following themes (i) “University and local community engagement in times of crisis” which included panelists offering a perspective from law enforcement and government emergency responders and (ii) “Emergency Management Academic Programs.” Overall, it was a successful event.
