As part of the 2017 President’s Lecture & Culture Series, Prairie View A&M University will host the second annual juried art contest. All works submitted are in conjunction with the National Black History Month theme, The Crisis in Black Education and sub theme Black Lives Matter. The following mediums are acceptable to submit: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, photography and video. Contest winners are eligible to win cash prizes funded by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Lionel Lofton, a native Houston artist and PVAMU alumni, will judge this year’s contest and select the winners. The first place winner will receive $2,500, second place $2,000 and third place $1,500. Their work will be displayed on the 4th floor of the John B. Coleman Library. The opening reception and awards ceremony for the competition and exhibition will be held at 6 p.m. February 13, 2017.  All are welcomed to attend the exhibit.

Last year’s winners submitted artwork that reflected the theme Hallowed Ground Sites of African American Memory and sub theme of Black History: A Mosaic of Artistic Expression. Houston based artist, Delita Martin, juried the contest selecting three winners out of the over 90 works submitted.

First place went to Clifford Robinson, III, a senior architect major. Jawon Thomas, a junior Digital Media Arts major, won second place and junior Samiria Percival, a junior Digital Media Arts major placed third. Dr. George C. Wright, president of Prairie View A&M University, awarded three students the President’s Choice Award. Chase Anderson, Caleb Riggins and Corinna Vega each received a $500 cash prize.
