PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (September 30, 2020) – Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, the first established honor society at a historically black college/university, returns to Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) this fall with its first induction and a virtual ceremony slated for November. The Alpha Pi Mu chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu was first chartered at PVAMU in 1950 to recognize the academic achievement of students.

“We are thrilled and honored to bring Alpha Kappa Mu back to campus,” said Chelsee Young, assistant director of the Honors Program. “This honor society recognizes the core of hardworking students, academic excellence, tenacity, and educational leadership. We are looking for both dreamers and doers, and, luckily, the PVAMU student is made of all that and more.”

Alpha Kappa Mu was founded in 1937 at Tennessee A&I State College, which is now Tennessee State University. It is a long-standing certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for collegiate honor societies. Alpha Kappa Mu now has over 90,000 members and 67 active chapters across the U.S. Quincy C. Moore, Ph.D., associate professor of biology and director of the Honors Program, will serve as an advisor to Alpha Kappa Mu at PVAMU.

“For the first induction class, we are interested in finding students that are ready to lead,” Moore said. “Scholarly excellence is at the forefront of answering the problems that exist in the world.”

Eligible students for Alpha Kappa Mu have to exemplify good character and exhibit potential for leadership and service. Taylon Owens, a chemical engineering senior, welcomes the opportunity to become part of the honor society.

“To my knowledge, Alpha Kappa Mu is the only honor society on campus that allows students from various majors to come together and determine how different disciplines play a role in solving a problem,” he said.

“PVAMU is a platform for the best and brightest and has produced many that have made a major impact in their disciplines and society,” Moore said. “The Alpha Pi Mu chapter will allow students from all disciplines to network, engage with think tanks, and promote the best in each other. I hope to provide an environment where scholars from the entire university can converse and create new entrepreneurial ventures, solve local, national, and global issues, and help to create a better Prairie View A&M University.”
