Melanye T. Price ’95

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (September 6, 2022) – Melanye Price ’95, Prairie View A&M University’s recently appointed special assistant to the president, will be featured in an upcoming documentary on the Smithsonian Channel, highlighting the portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Price, also an endowed professor of political science at PVAMU, was interviewed in the documentary “Picturing the Obamas” because of her book, “The Race Whisperer: Barack Obama and the Political Uses of Race,” as well as her work as director of the Ruth J. Simmons Center for Race and Justice at PVAMU.

“I was very excited to be asked to be a part of the documentary because it’s an affirmation that maybe my book project had an impact on the conversations we continue to have about the Obama legacy,” she said. “I am also always honored when I get to talk about Houston because it is my hometown and a city that I love. So, it combined my professional work and personal interests perfectly.”

Houston was one of only a handful of cities across the nation that hosted “The Obama Portraits Tour,” featuring the portraits of the Obamas by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.

“Picturing the Obamas” will debut on September 10 on the Smithsonian Channel. Click here to learn more.
