PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (July 6, 2020) – As we get into the thick of the hot and humid days of summer, many parents are scrambling to identify exciting, enriching, and engaging summer activities for their children. With social distancing and safety protocols still in place, virtual summer programs are popping up everywhere.
The latest program, Whimsical Wednesdays, hails from students, faculty, and staff from Prairie View A&M Universityās Whitlowe R. Green College of Education (WRGCOE). They worked collaboratively to develop a virtual summer experience designed to provide fun, yet instructional activities for children ages 6-12. Subjects include reading, STEM, health and wellness, performing arts, and cultural awareness.
āThe COVID-19 pandemic has unexpectedly interrupted the normal and familiar routines of life. We find ourselves in a different world, like the popular childrenās fictional storyĀ Alice in Wonderland. We are all trying to determine how we got here and how to function,ā said Michael L. McFrazier, dean of the WRGCOE. āThis virtual summer program is the combined effort of their time, talent, and resources to impact the community we serve.Ā This is our way of providing access and opportunity for young people.ā
The collegeās virtual summer program kicked off July 1 and will continue every Wednesday through the end of the month. This event is open to the public, but space is limited. To participate, kids will need access to a computer, iPad, or another electronic device, as well as an internet connection. To register, email coe@pvamu.edu.
