PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Students at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) looking to get ahead in their courses have a new option to choose from – a spring 3-week mini-mester. It’s the first time PVAMU will offer a mini-mester to give students additional opportunities to progress during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Each course, which runs from the last week in December through the second full week of January, allows students to receive a maximum of three credit hours, which is equal to one class. Each class will be offered solely online.

We talked with PVAMU Vice President for Enrollment Management Sarina R. Willis, Ph.D., to find out more information about what the new mini-mester at PVAMU entails.

What is a mini-mester?

A mini-mester is an accelerated course offered in a 3-week format after the fall or spring semester. Students will be able to receive the same quality instruction and earn the same credit hours as a regular semester course but in a fast-tracked format.

What are the dates for PVAMU’s upcoming mini-mester?

December 28, 2020 – January 14, 2021, with the final exam on January 15, 2021. Other important dates are included in the Academic Calendar.

Who is eligible to take a mini-mester course?

All PVAMU students are eligible to take a mini-mester course if it is offered and applies to their degree plans.

How can students register for the mini-mester?

Students can register for the mini-mester in Panther Tracks as part of their regular registration for the upcoming semester.

What are the benefits of taking mini-mester classes?

By enrolling in a mini-mester course, students have the opportunity to:

  • Get ahead and accelerate their progress toward earning a degree;
  • Retake a course;
  • Take a course needed for graduation that they found out about at the last minute; and
  • Take a course that does not fit into their schedules for the upcoming semester.

Which courses are being offered during the spring 2021 mini-mester?

Students can visit the course schedule and select the subject of the course they wish to take, go to “Part of Term,” and select “January Mini-Mester.” Classes range from Visual Arts, General Chemistry, Elementary Spanish, Statistics, Psychology, Government, Ethics, Mathematics, History, and Microeconomics.
