The 2024 election season was marked by intense and dynamic events, and Prairie View A&M University stood out as a major source of expertise and timely commentary. Our faculty and students were at the forefront, providing insightful analysis from the perspective of one of the state’s leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
A recap of the coverage shows major local television stations and national and international media outlets sought out our professors for their authoritative views. PVAMU was well-represented by notable students and distinguished experts, including Dr. William Hoston, a respected voice in political science part of the Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences, who sat down with ABC 13’s Rosie Nguyen to discuss the critical issue of the changing young vote and the shifting political preferences among Black voters. His insights were complemented by the perspectives of two illustrious political science students, Raiven Charles and Breanna Denaye McRoberts. Both students, who are also featured in a comprehensive article in the Defender, are highly active on campus and in the community, and their contributions highlighted the importance of youth involvement in the democratic process.
Dr. Bequita Pegram, Lecturer 1, History (BCAS), provided compelling commentary on the contentious history of voting at Prairie View A&M and was prominently featured on CGTN, in the Defender, and in the Houston Chronicle.
On election day, our faculty took over the airwaves. Dr. Melanye Price, a preeminent Endowed Professor of Political Science and the Director of the Ruth J. Simmons Center for Race and Justice, provided morning coverage on KPRC 2 Houston. Her analysis was followed by Dr. Tiffany Thomas, a PVAMU alumna, program coordinator, and assistant professor of community development in the School of Architecture. Dr. Thomas, who is also serving her second term on Houston’s City Council, offered her expertise in the afternoon, further solidifying PVAMU’s reputation as a resource for influential voices.
The increased media presence is a testament to PVAMU’s growing reputation as a source of expert commentary on the most pressing issues. The Office of Marketing and Communications looks forward to collaborating with other faculty experts. Let’s keep pushing forward, sharing our expertise, and making PVAMU proud.
