DETROIT (December 4, 2019) – Students from Prairie View A&M University won a national debate competition hosted by United Automobile Workers (UAW) and Ford Motor Company.

PVAMU went up against Tennessee State University, University of Michigan – Flint, and Central Michigan University in “Debate in the D” on Nov. 22 in Detroit, Michigan.

“Our team, which consisted of Chiamaka Okoye, a junior biology major, and Antonious Brown, a senior business major, took on Central Michigan University. Central Michigan is a nationally ranked team,” said PVAMU Debate Coach Christopher Medina. “It was an excellent debate, and our students ultimately inspired over 500 high school, middle school, and elementary school students.”

PVAMU debated the affirmative and Central Michigan University debated the opposition on abolishing standardized testing. The topic for Tennessee State University and the University of Michigan – Flint was individuals being responsible for protecting the privacy of their information online.

More than 500 Detroit-area students watched the competition live, which was held in the auditorium of a local school. This is the third year of UAW-Ford hosting the debate.

“Debate in the D” is a part of UAW-Ford community initiatives that provide educational opportunities for Detroit-area youth in arts and critical thinking.
