PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (May 6, 2020) – Just days after announcing Prairie View A&M University students could apply to receive federal, financial assistance from the more than $6.9 million in its Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act fund, applications have started to pour in.

The CARES Act provides federal aid to institutions of higher education to help students cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. Eligible expenses include areas such as food, housing, utilities, course materials, technology, healthcare, child care, and moving/transportation expenses.

To date, the university has received more than 4,000 applications, which is about half of its spring 2020 population of 8,235 students. Eligible students can receive up to $1,000 in emergency aid. Application reviews began this week and will continue as long as funds are available. PVAMU officials are making sure to expedite the posting of awards to student accounts as quickly as possible.

ā€œOur hope is that the funds allocated will help our students overcome their financial struggles so they can triumph in their studies during this unprecedented time we are living in,ā€ said James M. Palmer, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs at PVAMU.

ā€œPVAMU will continue to pursue additional opportunities for support when possible,ā€ Timothy Sams, Ph.D., vice president for Student Affairs, and Sarina Willis, Ph.D., vice president for Enrollment Management, said in a joint memorandum earlier this week.
