NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Jan. 5, 2023) – Prairie View A&M University alumna Pamela Goynes-Brown ’84 has made history as Nevada’s first Black mayor. She officially took office for the City of North Las Vegas last month.
Goynes-Brown, a longtime resident of North Las Vegas and longtime educator turned public servant, has lived in the city since 1964. She worked for the Clark County School District for 35 years before serving as the first female African American councilwoman of North Las Vegas’ Ward 2. She also was the first female African American mayor pro-tempore, having served in that role twice.
“A second-generation North Las Vegas former Councilman, Pamela follows in the footsteps of her father, Theron Goynes, a former North Las Vegas Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore. He taught Pamela the plain truth – City Council service is all about uplifting people while remaining a careful steward of their tax dollars,” according to her website.
Mayor Goynes-Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from PVAMU in 1984, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She also holds a master’s degree from NOVA Southeastern University in elementary education, with an endorsement in educational leadership.
