PVAMU: 150 Years in the Making, From Six Graduates to More Than 87,000 Alumni

The applause lasts only a few moments after names are called and degrees are conferred. Families cheer, cameras flash, and graduates walk across the stage into the next chapter of their lives.

At first glance, it looks like any other commencement at any other university.

At PVAMU, every commencement represents the culmination of a story that has been unfolding for 150 years. While graduates cross the stage one by one, they become part of a legacy built by generations of Panthers whose perseverance, vision and belief in the power of education transformed lives, communities and industries.

As the University celebrates its Sesquicentennial, Summer Commencement marks more than the close of another academic year. It begins a yearlong celebration honoring the people who built Prairie View A&M University, those who continue to shape it today and the generations who will define its future.

Commencement, today, reflects just how far Prairie View A&M has come.

More than 2,500 graduates crossed the stage during the University’s 2025–2026 commencement ceremonies. What began with six graduates has grown into commencement ceremonies celebrating thousands of new Panthers each year. Yet the significance of that walk across the stage remains unchanged. Every graduate represents years of perseverance, sacrifice, and possibility fulfilled. For generations of Panthers, a PVAMU degree has represented opportunity, progress, and the power to create lasting change for families, communities, and future generations.

That evolution, from a handful of pioneers to generations of Panthers expanding what is possible, is a story woven throughout Prairie View A&M’s history.

As the University grew, so did its academic ambitions.

The introduction of master’s degrees in August 1939 marked a new chapter, expanding Prairie View’s mission beyond undergraduate education and preparing graduates for leadership, research, and professional practice. What began with the University’s first small cohort of advanced-degree candidates has grown into graduate programs that prepare leaders serving in classrooms, boardrooms, hospitals, laboratories, and communities across the nation.

The evolution continued with another defining milestone: the University’s first doctoral degree in 2004. It represented more than a new credential. It announced Prairie View’s emergence as a center for advanced scholarship, original research, and intellectual discovery. That first doctoral hooding has since grown into record numbers of doctoral graduates whose research advances knowledge and addresses real-world challenges.

Today, PVAMU serves over 10,000 students annually through more than 75 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. As Texas’s second-oldest public institution of higher education, the University continues to expand its research enterprise, strengthen its national reputation and prepare graduates to lead with knowledge, skill, and purpose.

Viewed individually, these milestones are impressive. Viewed together, they reveal something extraordinary.

The history of Prairie View A&M University can be traced through its commencement ceremonies. Every graduating class reflects a larger story of growth. Every diploma marks another promise fulfilled. Every ceremony demonstrates how one generation created greater opportunities for the next.

The numbers tell that story with remarkable clarity. Eight students became more than 87,000 alumni. Six graduates became thousands. A handful of the University’s first advanced-degree candidates became thriving graduate and doctoral programs recognized for academic excellence. Each milestone was built upon the one before it.

That is the true measure of 150 years: not simply how many degrees have been awarded, but how many lives have been transformed.

As Prairie View A&M University celebrates its Sesquicentennial, commencement serves as both a reflection and a promise. It honors the strength, perseverance and vision of those who built the institution while welcoming the next generation of Panthers who will help define its future.

One hundred and fifty years from now, another graduating class will gather to celebrate its own commencement. Those graduates will become part of the same story that began with eight students whose belief in education helped shape one of Texas’ most enduring public institutions.

This summer, 292 Panthers: 173 undergraduates, 97 master’s, and 22 doctoral candidates will add their names to a legacy more than 150 years in the making.
