PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M University may be more than 6,500 miles from his native Nigeria, but that didn’t stop graduate student Samson Eromonsei from finding a home here. Samson will earn his Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering this spring.

“I am a first-generation college student,” said Samson. “This has been a source of pride and motivation as well as a challenge, most especially in a foreign terrain. My experience at PVAMU, from academics to extracurricular involvement, boosted my confidence and helped me define clearer career objectives.

“PVAMU has a rich cultural heritage that emphasizes the empowerment of African American students and the promotion of black excellence. In the University’s diverse community, I’ve met great friends from across the world. This diversity enriched my experience by exposing me to different perspectives and ideas.

“Being involved with the National Society of Black Engineers significantly enhanced my experience at Prairie View A&M,” he said. “Being part of the group offered emotional and academic support, from study groups with classmates to mentoring from alumni and older students. And the opportunity to attend an NSBE conference in Atlanta was an experience that changed my view of my career path, inspired new academic and professional goals, and deepened my thought for future career planning,” he added.

Samson worked full-time at Shell Energy before beginning his master’s program and has already seen his studies pay off with a promotion to a new role. “My courses and practical experiences helped me build stronger skills that I’ve been able to apply directly in my workplace,” he said.

His advice to current students? “Take advantage of the culturally rich and diverse environment at PVAMU. Engage with people from different backgrounds and participate in cultural events. This exposure will broaden your perspectives and enhance your understanding of the world. PVAMU offers numerous resources to support student success, including tutoring centers, libraries, career services, and counseling. Make sure to use these resources early and often.”

And finally, “Keep an open mind and be willing to explore new subjects, ideas, and skills.”
