PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (May 2, 2023) – For the third year, TEDx came to Prairie View A&M University. The theme for TEDxPVAMU 2023 was “Food for Thought.”

“The goal was to challenge conventional perspectives,” said Chelsee Young, assistant director of The Honors Program, which hosted the program. “Our speakers presented a collection of observations and discoveries, each connected with a shared mission to feed your mind. Listeners also immersed themselves in new concepts to reevaluate their approach to life.”

This year’s lead organizer, Jasmine Jeffries, a communication studies major, considered the students’ experience for this event. “I want my PVAMU peers to have exposure to an infinite amount of intellectual conversations and opportunities,” she said. “Prairie View students and graduates make an impact everywhere we go, and it’s only fitting that we take the TEDx stage to continue to do as such.”

TEDxPVAMU 2023 speakers included:

  • Frank Jackson, a 1973 PVAMU graduate who returned to work at the University after serving eight years of active duty in the U.S. Navy;
  • Ebony Moss, a junior and political and health care advocate;
  • Russel Thomas, an agriculture specialist and budget analyst with the United States Department of Agriculture Agency ERS. He attended PVAMU as a USDA 1890 scholar; and
  • Lisa Williams, an engineer and healthy lifestyle advocate who received her B.S. in mechanical engineering from PVAMU. Now, she is the senior director of operations at Dow.

TEDx, a grassroots initiative, was created under the umbrella of TED’s overall mission to investigate and discover “ideas worth spreading” by collaborating with local communities worldwide. Now, over 3,000 TEDx events are held annually.

In past years, TEDxPVAMU brought “Becoming an Outlier” in 2022 and “Unlock Your Mind” in 2021. Past events are available (and this year’s event will soon be available) for viewing on the University’s official YouTube channel and at TED.com.
