May 6-12 is designated as Nurses Week, and it provides us an opportunity to celebrate the nurses who provide essential care not only when we are sick but also when we are well.  The 4.3 million nurses in the United States are the heart and soul as well as the backbone of our healthcare system, educating and advocating for patients, families, and communities locally, nationally, and globally.

This year’s theme is “Nurses make a Difference,” and as a 38-year nursing professional, I have witnessed the care provided daily by my colleagues. Nurses are there during the miracle of birth, holding a birthing person’s hand as they push new life into this world, as well as shedding tears as they comfort family members who witness their loved one’s transition from life. And we are there during all the moments in between.  It is these moments that truly embody the essence of nursing.

This year, the Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing celebrates 106 years of educating nurses! I would like to salute all who have come before us: Mr. Brewer, Ms. Mason, Ms. Stancil, Dr. Lewis, Dean Mangaroo and Adams, and so many others.  Their hard work and dedication in serving our community and educating nurses have allowed PVAMU CON to be the nursing education leader it is today.

As we look toward graduation and nursing pinning for our 2024 CON graduates, I’d like to say Congratulations! You are entering a profession where you will make a difference. I want to thank all my nursing colleagues; I recognize the difference you have made in the world and in our profession. You are the difference needed today!

Happy Nurses Week!

Dr. Allyssa L. Harris is Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing at Prairie View A&M University.
