National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting libraries’ vital role in our communities. From April 7 to April 13, many libraries nationwide opened their doors to celebrate the power of literacy, learning, and the joy of reading.

On the campus of Prairie View A&M University, the John B. Coleman Library and the Northwest Houston Center Library hosted the 17th Annual Book Giveaway, allowing students to select free books from a diverse collection of over 100 titles.

The book giveaways at the two libraries were made possible through faculty, staff, and community contributions. Library staff rigorously searched every corner and contact to find new and used books to create a collection of engaging titles that students didn’t have to purchase or check out. The Circulation and Digital Commons Departments created a non-judgmental floor display where students could select whatever they were interested in finding. The sight of students eagerly browsing through the selection, interestingly choosing their next literary adventure, was a testament to the impact of this initiative and collaboration.Ā Faculty responded to the call for book donations, and students showed up, proving that reading is still a great source of personal enrichment and enjoyment.

Recently, there have been news reports where access to books is being challenged in some states. Because of this, the Book Giveaway during National Library Week takes on heightened importance. Several states have created measures to restrict access to certain books and have gone as far as making laws against librarians. However, such actions threaten fundamental rights to information and diverse perspectives, crucial for an informed and empowered society.

Libraries are sanctuaries for readers of all ages, offering books that encourage explorations of ideas, cultures, and experiences; National Library Week served as a reminder of libraries’ indispensable role in promoting literacy, education, and access to information.

For students, in particular, libraries are invaluable resources that complement formal education, enforce creativity and critical thinking skills, and provide opportunities for self-directed learningā€”skills that are essential for success. The purpose of the Book Giveaway was to instill a passion for reading and a lifelong appreciation for the written word. By providing free access to books, libraries bridge socioeconomic divides, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to enrich their minds and expand their horizons. In a world where knowledge is power, libraries democratize access to information, leveling the playing field and empowering individuals to pursue their dreams.

The John B. Coleman and the Northwest Houston Center Library are grateful to all who supported National Library Week and the Book Giveaways. By supporting our libraries and advocating for the importance of reading, we reaffirm our commitment to a society that values knowledge, diversity, intellectual freedom, and empowering readers of all ages.
