PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (September 8, 2021) – Eight students from Prairie View A&M University’s College of Business (COB) and Roy G. Perry College of Engineering have been selected as Halliburton Business and Engineering Scholarship Fund recipients. They will participate in the inaugural cohort of the RISE Scholars Program, a partnership between PVAMU and one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the energy industry.

Rise Scholars

“My dream job is to work in pharmaceuticals or the oil and gas industry,” said Kennedy Dent, a junior chemical engineering major and RISE scholar at PVAMU. “I love being able to innovate and design new things.”

Dent and fellow PVAMU RISE Scholars Darianna Glenn, Kendall Brown, Kayla Broussard, Clivano Rolle, Chelsea Guidry, Ryan Logwood and Erron Williams recently got a chance to meet with Halliburton officials, including Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Miller. They were recognized as being the first from PVAMU to receive this honor for the 2021-2022 school year.

“Our exciting relationship with Prairie View A&M is a great opportunity to develop future leaders and expand our diversity and inclusion mission, both of which are high priorities for Halliburton,” said Miller.

As part of the $1 million initiative announced in January, in addition to the initial group of eight students, Halliburton will award 16 scholarships each year valued at $12,500 apiece over the next four years. Students can renew the scholarship for two years (or up to four semesters), and they will participate in Halliburton’s RISE and summer intern programs.

Ruth and Halliburton

The purpose of the Fund is to support Halliburton’s mission of diversity and inclusion in building its pipeline of future talent.

“At Prairie View, students are our focus. They are our hope and inspiration, our legacy and our promise,” said PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons. “We are grateful for Halliburton’s commitment to the success of our engineering and business students.”

In addition to the scholarships, other components of Halliburton’s program include:

  • Professional Development – Skill development training that includes professional, leadership, and technical competencies to help prepare students for professional life after graduation;
  • Exposure – Building awareness of the oil and gas industry and highlighting the breadth of opportunities from business to operations;
  • Experiential Learning – Scholars will be offered internships that provide on-the-job training that align their educational paths with their career goals; and
  • Mentorship – Scholars will be assigned leaders at Halliburton who will serve as their mentors.

“Blessed. This is a word I have been using to describe my entire experience at Prairie View A&M University. Opportunities are endless, and I have been blessed and highly favored to be awarded this amazing scholarship,” Dent said. “Being the first of anything is an honor because you serve as an example for those to follow; I am paving the way for someone else! I also feel like a leader. I was chosen for a reason, and it is my job to fulfill that purpose.”
