As a first-generation college student, Sheleyia Ceasar set out to find a supportive university that she connected with. After visiting Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) for the first time, she knew it was the right place for her.

“I always felt like everyone at PVAMU wants you to be successful and will push you to be the best version of yourself,” Ceasar said. “I love PVAMU’s rich, historical culture and the people. I love the freedom, acceptance, and that I can be my authentic self.”

This summer, Ceasar is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the College of Business.

“Being a first-generation college graduate means the world to me and my family,” she said. “With the knowledge I’ve obtained, I can finally start to break the generational curses in my family.”

Ceasar credits the College of Business’ plethora of resources with helping her discover the right career path.

“I didn’t know any college graduates growing up, so it was hard for me not to have anyone to seek advice from,” she said. “I made a very conscious decision to become that role model for my community. Hopefully, I have opened the door for my family to see that getting a college degree is attainable.”

After graduation, Ceasar has accepted a position with Goosehead Insurance as a service agent. Ultimately, she aspires to be a human resources manager, where she can connect with and help people.

“I’m looking forward to finally doing something that is fulfilling to me,” she said. “I enjoy a challenge, and I look forward to all of the learning curves and growth opportunities in my new role.”

While at PVAMU, Ceasar worked in a retail environment, which she says further helped develop her business skills. She was also eligible to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society. To top it off, she made the dean’s list every semester.

Ceasar’s advice for other students is never to be afraid to ask for help.

“College is hard on everyone, and you do not have to go at it alone,” she said. “Take a nap if you need to, take a break if you need to, meditate if you need to, and listen to your body. You are unstoppable when your mind and body are rested.”
