Michael McFrazier

Dr. Michael L. McFrazier

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Michael L. McFrazier has been appointed Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective July 1, 2023.

Currently Dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, Dr. McFrazier has held a number of senior leadership positions over his 25-year tenure at Prairie View A&M University — including Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Northwest Houston Center, Vice President for Administration and Chief of Staff, and most recently serving as Interim President.

Before joining the College of Education in 1998, Dr. McFrazier was a public school teacher and administrator. At PVAMU, he has distinguished himself as a respected leader and advocate for the university and a laudable colleague and professor. His professional research interests include ļ¬rst generation college student academic self-efļ¬cacy, minority male academic achievement and mentorship, and personality inventories as tools to prepare effective educational leaders.

Of note, Dr. McFrazier has provided transformational leadership during his tenure in the College of Education, and he has galvanized the faculty, staff, and students to implement a number of strategic priorities and quality improvement initiatives. As a result, the State Board of Educator Certiļ¬cation, based on the recommendation from the Texas Education Agency, has acknowledged and commended educator preparation at PVAMU for the following:

  • Preparing the Educators Texas Needsā€”Percentage of prepared teachers who identify as teachers of color.
  • Preparing Educators for Long-Term Successā€”Teacher retention as a Texas public school professional for ļ¬ve years.
  • Rigorous and Robust Preparationā€”First Test Pass Rate in teacher shortage areas -English Language Arts & Reading.

Dr. McFrazierā€™s proven commitment to PVAMU makes him the ideal person to lead the Division of Academic Affairs during this transition period. He succeeds Dr. James Palmer, who has been named Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

A national search for our next permanent Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will be executed, with an anticipated launch in September. Detailed information will be provided on a Provost Search webpage in the coming months.Ā Additionally, we will begin the process of identifying an Interim Dean for the College of Education within the next few weeks.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. McFrazier on this interim appointment.

Sincerely,

Tomikia P. LeGrande, Ed.D.
President
