Dear Students:

At the end of Panther Camp, a week-long transition to college, many students were impacted by heat-related issues at the program’s final event. Medical and safety personnel responded quickly to support impacted students, and our team diligently observed the affected students for several hours thereafter.

As we thoroughly review the decision-making process surrounding yesterday’s event and assess upcoming programs, please know that we are fully devoted to ensuring our students’ safety and security while furnishing an all-encompassing college experience. We are taking multiple measures to support our student’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

We want to express our deep appreciation for the exceptional leadership demonstrated by our student leaders. Fellow Panthers were helping each other through the crisis, some of whom were our student organizations, and we appreciate those efforts. Through it all, some of you may have witnessed some traumatic events; we understand the impact it may have on your well-being. If any students find themselves needing support or counseling services, please visit the Owens-Franklin Health Center at www.pvamu.edu/healthservices/student-counseling-services, or you may contact the University Crisis Hotline at 936-553-0990.

Students may also contact the Office of the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@pvamu.edu to receive answers to questions, voice concerns, or request support. We will continue to monitor the impact of this situation on students and take appropriate action.

Note that University classes begin Monday, August 21, and students are encouraged to attend classes daily. Please communicate in a timely manner with your professor if your class attendance is impacted. Students should take appropriate action to stay hydrated, especially during this time of extreme heat.

Sincerely,

Beverly Copeland
Vice President for Student Affairs
