Prairie View Trail Riders Association will kick-off the rodeo season with its Annual Chili Cook-Off Competition and Hog Roast, noon Feb 27, 2017. The free event will take place just west the football stadium on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Founded in 1957 by James Francies, Myrtis Dightmas Sr. and A.N. Poindexter Sr., the PVTRA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote agricultural interests in young Americans and foster the continued preservation of western heritage and culture. Itās also the oldest and most recognized predominantly black trail ride organization associated the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Proceeds will benefit the PVTRA Scholarship Fund. This yearās scholarship recipient is a PVAMU Agriculture student who is heavily involved with the PVTRA.
Lenise Brown, of the PVTRA, is excited for this yearās event. āWe look forward to the comradery between trail riders and the friendly competition amongst friends,ā said Brown. Prior to the event, the PVTRA will do a parade around campus. They will also visit Jones Elementary at 9:30 a.m. for a āShow and Tellā event. Chili meat will be provided by the association, no entry fee, however, cooking teams must pre-register at 281-235-5426.
