Prairie View Trail Riders Association will kick-off the rodeo season with its Annual Chili Cook-Off Competition and Hog Roast, noon Feb 27, 2017. The free event will take place just west the football stadium on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Founded in 1957 by James Francies, Myrtis Dightmas Sr. and A.N. Poindexter Sr., the PVTRA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote agricultural interests in young Americans and foster the continued preservation of western heritage and culture. Itā€™s also the oldest and most recognized predominantly black trail ride organization associated the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Proceeds will benefit the PVTRA Scholarship Fund. This yearā€™s scholarship recipient is a PVAMU Agriculture student who is heavily involved with the PVTRA.

Lenise Brown, of the PVTRA, is excited for this yearā€™s event. ā€œWe look forward to the comradery between trail riders and the friendly competition amongst friends,ā€ said Brown. Prior to the event, the PVTRA will do a parade around campus. They will also visit Jones Elementary at 9:30 a.m. for a ā€˜Show and Tellā€ event. Chili meat will be provided by the association, no entry fee, however, cooking teams must pre-register at 281-235-5426.
