Dr. Harold M. Hyman

Dr. Harold M. Hyman received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University in 1952. He has held teaching positions at Earlham College, Arizona State University,UCLA, the University of Illinois, and was Rice University’s William P. Hobby Professor of History from 1968 – 1996. Dr. Hyman’s scholarly interests include U.S. Constitutional and Legal History and the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction. Dr. Hyman has been a Ford Foundation Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Lecturer, an Organization of American Historians Lecturer, judge for the Pulitzer, Littleton-Griswold (AHA), and other prizes, NEH reviewer, and past president of the American Society for Legal History. He has also worked closely with the Texas Bar Association’s Law-Related Education Project, and served on several professional societies’ committees.

The Collection
The Hyman Collection at the John B. Coleman Library includes journal articles, manuscripts, scholarly reprints, newspaper clippings, historic election results, and quotations related to Dr. Hyman’s research interests that have been collected throughout his distinguished career. Major topics in the collection include Police Powers, Reformers, Reconstruction, Urban War Powers, and Constitutional Law. The collection’s inventory provides a detailed contents list. The collection is housed in the Reference Department on the first floor of the Library.
Patrons interested in the collection should contact the Special Collections and Archives Department at (936) 261-1516. The collection may be photocopied at 10 cents per page, or used in the library, but will not be loaned out. The physical collection is located in the reference section in the lateral file cabinets, where you approach the periodicals/microforms area. The collection may be accessed at any time during regular library hours.
