Welcome to LCOM!
The Department of Languages and Communication (LCOM), housed in the Marvin D. and June Samuel Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences (BCAS), prepares students to become thoughtful communicators, creative professionals, culturally responsive leaders, and engaged global citizens. Through programs and courses in communication, English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, humanities, media production, journalism, public relations, creative and technical writing, and global studies abroad, the department provides students with a strong liberal arts foundation grounded in critical thinking, cultural awareness, ethical communication, and professional practice.
Our diverse faculty and staff are committed to creating a dynamic learning environment that supports academic excellence, student success, and career readiness. Students develop advanced verbal, written, visual, digital, and intercultural communication skills that prepare them for graduate and professional study, teaching, media and entertainment industries, public relations, corporate communication, professional writing, government service, nonprofit leadership, and emerging careers shaped by technology and globalization.
LCOM continues its mission of strengthening students’ written and oral communication while expanding opportunities in media production, global languages, digital storytelling, and interdisciplinary learning. Our curriculum encourages students to examine language, culture, media, and communication as powerful tools for understanding human experience, advancing social responsibility, and contributing meaningfully to local, national, and global communities.
LCOM also provides students with hands-on learning experiences through media labs, language learning resources, writing-intensive courses, student media opportunities, production facilities, faculty-led study abroad, and collaborative projects. These experiences allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world contexts while developing the confidence, creativity, and professional skills necessary for success in an evolving workforce.
As a department rooted in the liberal arts and responsive to contemporary professional demands, the Department of Languages and Communication remains committed to preparing students who can write clearly, speak effectively, think critically, engage across cultures, and use media and technology with purpose. Our passion for educating tomorrow’s leaders is reflected in our dedication to academic rigor, creative expression, innovation, and the transformative power of communication.
