PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (March 17, 2020) – COVID-19 has caused a continuing and imminent health crisis around the world, across the nation, and in our own communities nearby. This pandemic poses a threat to our health and way of life. With that knowledge and the responsibility that we bear to serve and protect this community, we met today to decide on how to proceed during this continuing crisis.

In that meeting, after consultation with the Texas A&M University System and taking into account the recommended limit of no more than ten person gatherings, we have decided on the following steps to minimize contact that could spread the COVID-19 virus on our campus. This is not an exhaustive list of changes anticipated but an effort to provide information about major changes that will occur.

1) Students in residence halls may return to their rooms on Monday, March 23. However, all classes will be moved to an online format for the remainder of the semester in order to guarantee that, no matter what course the pandemic takes in our area, students will be able to complete the semester and receive credit for their efforts. A detailed communication will be sent explaining how this transition will occur.

2) We will remain under the guidelines concerning limited-size gatherings on the campus with all large scale events postponed. This will affect a range of services, including how meals will be made available.

3) Essential university services will continue.

4) Spring commencement will be postponed until a later date. Information concerning the new date will be distributed soon.

5) We expect summer classes to proceed online.

The Provost and Vice President for Student Affairs will be issuing statements with relevant details about the forthcoming process and schedule. The Office of Human Resources will issue guidelines for special leaves or approval of an alternate work location for employees approved by their supervisors for these alternatives.

This remains a fluid situation necessitating rapid change where public health is at risk. I ask that you understand the importance of complying with official guidance on how to minimize exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Be aware that false information about the presence of the virus in this community may appear on social media. When and if we have a case in our midst, we will issue a public statement disclosing that fact.

Please visit the PVAMU COVID-19 website for information about how to keep yourself and others safe.
