The number of degrees awarded surpassed 75,000.

Prairie View A&M University had 462 bachelor’s degree candidates, 109 master’s, and 13 doctoral candidates this fall, bringing the total number to more than 75,630 alumni who have graduated from PVAMU since the university opened its doors in 1876.

 

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded Prairie View A&M University a $1 million grant to support faculty development in the humanities and associated social sciences.

Faculty in these areas support majors and minors such as English, Spanish, history, political science, sociology, geography, legal studies, humanities, art, music, theater, and communications, among other areas.

 

Prairie View A&M University held its alumni reception at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.

It was a memorable night celebrating the achievements of PVAMU graduates from across the nation.

 

Prairie View A&M University’s College of Nursing is celebrating 100 years of making a difference in defining and actualizing a positive experience for the women and men who choose nursing for their careers. 

 

The college was the first one on PVAMU’s campus to offer a diploma to enrolled students.

 

Prairie View A&M University aided in the construction of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences’  Community Greenhouse and Garden for the City of Prairie View.

The NextGEN (gardening, education, nutrition) Project, which is a partnership between PVAMU, Jones Elementary, and the City of Prairie View, allows students and residents to grow plants and learn proper techniques in farming and agriculture.

 

The Prairie View A&M University Men’s Basketball, Men’s Golf, Women’s Bowling, and Women’s Soccer teams secured SWAC championship wins during their 2018-2019 seasons.

PVAMU is Where Champions Are Built!

 

Prairie View A&M University opened an LGBTQ+ Resource Office on its main campus.

With this historic feat, Prairie View became the fifth historically black college/university to have a designated safe space for LGBTQ+ members.

 

Prairie View A&M University hosted scholars, Cornel West, W. Gabriel Selassie I, Paula Giddings, Gloria Steinem, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Elsa Barkley Brown, Renita Weems, and Cheryl Wall, as part of its new African American Studies Initiative (AASI).

AASI focuses on providing an interdisciplinary study of the experiences of the people of African descent in America and abroad.

 

President Ruth J. Simmons, along with School of Architecture Dean Ikhlas Sabouni, hosted students, faculty, staff, and friends for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Fabrication Design Center.

The new center features a variety of equipment that allows students to build, develop, and test their design ideas using the most advanced technology on the market. The new center also received a design award from the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

 

The National Science Foundation selected Prairie View A&M University’s Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES) to receive a $5 million award.

The award allows CEES to work collaboratively with academic, industry, and national laboratory partners on transitional and transformative global energy research to address national and global challenges of energy and environmental sustainability.

 

Prairie View A&M University had some administration-level changes.

Dr. Sarina R. Willis was named vice president for Enrollment Management; Dr. Magesh T. Rajan, vice president for Research; Dr. Dorie J. Gilbert, dean of Graduate Studies; and Dr. Michael L. McFrazier, dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education. Tina Montgomery was also named registrar and Tony Moore, chief information officer for Information Resource Management.
