Dr. Daniel P. Aldrich is Director of the Security and Resilience Studies Program and Professor in political science and public policy at Northeastern University in Boston. The 11 March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and associated tsunami and nuclear meltdowns affected millions of lives in many ways. Mortality rates varied across different towns in the region. On the basis of his analysis of data gathered from multiple sources, such as fieldwork, interviews, and surveys, Aldrich emphasizes the role of social capital and networks as social infrastructure that contributes to reduced mortality and accelerated disaster recovery.
