The six winning designs were announced at City Council on August 22, eliciting praise from Mayor Sylvester Turner and members of City Council. AIA Houston executive director Rusty Bievenue and board president Derek Webb, AIA, also attended the announcement, joined by several jury members. The competition jury was composed of four stakeholders from the Complete Communities (Assata Richards, Sandra Rodriguez, Thomas Garcia-Prats and Ann Watkins), award-winning architect Val Glitsch, FAIA, and home builder David Gordon of Whitestone Builders. The jury selected five single-family house designs and one urban streetscape design for Gulfton.

The Prairie View A&M University School of Architecture Race to Zero Design Team** won “Special Distinction for Building Community through Architecture” for their design of “The Fly Flat,” a pocket community featuring three living units, a community center and communal green space. The living spaces consist of modular units that could be prefabricated for low cost. This design utilized low-impact development strategies such as a rainwater cistern and bioswale to capture runoff. The team also proposed creating a community land trust that could double as a solar co-op utility.
