There are 2 ways to use Turnitin, and the links below address both from the faculty perspective.

The Turnitin External Tool is used when adding a Turnitin link for submissions that are not going to be directly connected to the Canvas gradebook. This is added directly to the Module as an external tool. A similarity report is generated, but other functions are done within Turnitin.

The Turnitin Plagiarism Framework is used when creating an assignment in Canvas for submissions that will be directly connected to the Canvas gradebook. It’s added using the standard Canvas assignment tool set to the “Online” Submission Type with Text Entry or File Uploads. A similarity report is generated and the assignment can be used with Canvas’s group and peer reviewing functions.

Find out more information about the difference between the two types of Turnitin access at the External Tool vs. Plagiarism Framework page at the Turnitin website.
