In July 2014, Dr. Derek Wilson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, received the Community Service Award at the 46th Association of Black Psychologists International Convention in Indianapolis. Ms. Lucy Uboh, a rising senior in the department, nominated Dr. Wilson for the award because of his service in the Houston area. The Department of Psychology is always excited to see a student wanting to publicly acknowledge a professor’s work among his/her peers.

The Community Service Award honors those scholars who demonstrate a positive impact on the current or potential welfare of the African-American community locally, regionally or nationally.

Wilson is the president of the Houston Association of Black Psychologists, and dedicates his time as an advisory board member for Educational Dynamics College Health and Wellness. He actively volunteers at Lincoln Elementary School in Houston, working with kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the after-school reading program and Chess Club.
