29th Annual Texas 4H Goat Judging ContestThe 29th Annual Texas 4H Goat Judging Contest was held at the PVAMU campus on July 29 and 30.  Over 40 4-Hers, parents and coaches attended the workshops held at the International Goat Research Center (IGRC) on Friday, July 29 to learn the basics of how to evaluate goats and to put together convincing sets of reasons to justify their selections. On Saturday July 30, 22 youths participated in the actual contest. They started with a written test, then judged eight classes of goats, and eventually participated in a goat bowl contest. The goats were provided by the IGRC as well as by three additional local breeders working in partnership with the CAHS.

This year’s winner was Michaela Martin from Chico 4-H in Denton County.  She scored an impressive 364 out of 400 in her placing accuracy and an outstanding 97% in her oral reasons.  Martin will be the youth liaison at a meeting in central Mexico this fall where they will be developing the dairy goat 4-H program for their state.

Pictures of the event can be found on the PVAMU College of Agriculture and Human Sciences Facebook page in the 2016 4-H Goat Judging Contest album.
