Today is a historic day for Prairie View A&M University and The Texas A&M University System. We will be inaugurating Dr. Ruth J. Simmons as Prairie View A&M’s 8th president.
If you know Dr. Simmons, you know that she breaks down barriers and encourages excellence everywhere she goes. She was the first black president of Smith College. Then she was tapped to lead Brown University, becoming the first-ever black president of an Ivy League institution. Today, she will be formally recognized as the first female president in Prairie View A&M’s history.
Time magazine has called her America’s “best college president.” I could not be prouder to call her a member of the Texas A&M System family.
