PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (Aug. 4, 2025) — Today, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) announced the conclusion of its Men’s and Women’s Tennis Programs, effective immediately, as part of a broader strategic realignment within Panther Athletics.
This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the University’s athletic portfolio and is rooted in a commitment to long-term operational excellence, fiscal sustainability, and student-centered planning.
A Difficult but Necessary Decision
For decades, PVAMU’s tennis programs have fostered competitive excellence, character development, and academic achievement. This change in no way diminishes that proud legacy; however, the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, including rising costs, facility demands, and the need for programmatic focus, necessitated tough decisions. This step allows the University to prioritize investment in core programs that serve the largest number of student-athletes and align with PVAMU’s long-term strategic goals.
Student-Athlete Support Front and Center
PVAMU is committed to supporting every affected student-athlete during this transition:
- Scholarships Honored: Athletic scholarships will remain in place for eligible student-athletes through graduation, provided they stay in good academic standing and do not enter the transfer portal.
- Transfer Support: Those wishing to pursue tennis elsewhere will receive full assistance with NCAA transfer documentation, academic advising, and personal counseling.
- Well-Being Services: Dedicated advisors and counselors are available to ensure student-athletes continue to thrive personally and academically.
Commitment to Excellence
This shift reflects PVAMU’s long-term strategy to modernize athletic infrastructure, enhance student services, and direct resources toward programs that align with institutional priorities. The University will expand support for non-revenue sports and explore increased opportunities for female student-athletes, in compliance with Title IX.
