In January, 1941, the Regional Supervisor of E.S.M.W.T (Engineering Science Management and War Training), and representatives from A&M College of Texas and the Prairie View College met at Prairie View and decided to offer defense training courses for Negroes of Texas and the Southwest, using the facilities of the College in addition to essential equipment to be loaned to the college by the Federal government. By June 8, 1942, the fifth courses had begun with about 55 students enrolled during the summer. The students were mostly instructors from the various communities and took the principles of education for industry and war back to their students. They enrolled in the following courses: Electrical Maintenance, Structural Drafting, Advanced Construction Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Testing of Materials.
