Dr. Jeffrey Allen Murdock is an internationally acclaimed conductor, scholar, clinician, and author whose work has transformed the study and performance of Black sacred music. Through visionary leadership, groundbreaking curriculum development, internationally recognized scholarship, and artistic excellence, he has become one of the foremost voices advancing Black sacred music within higher education. Through his artistry, scholarship, and institutional leadership, Dr. Murdock has become one of the leading architects of Black sacred music as an academic discipline in the twenty-first century. His work continues to shape the scholarship, pedagogy, and performance practices that define the field for a new generation of musicians, educators, and scholars. Distinguished by a rare integration of scholarly research, artistic excellence, institutional leadership, and ministry, he bridges the academy, the concert stage, and the Black church with equal authenticity and influence.
Dr. Murdock joins Yale University following a distinguished tenure at the University of Arkansas, where he served as Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and Founding Director of the Arkansas Center for Black Music. Under his leadership, the Center emerged as one of the nation’s leading academic initiatives dedicated to the study, preservation, performance, and celebration of African American musical traditions.
As a scholar, Dr. Murdock is widely recognized for advancing the academic study and artistic practice of Black sacred music. He founded the Arkansas Center for Black Music and created the world’s first Master of Music degree in Black Sacred Music, initiatives that have reshaped graduate music education while expanding opportunities for the scholarly study, preservation, and performance of African American sacred musical traditions. His work has become a model for integrating artistic excellence, cultural preservation, and academic rigor, redefining the place of Black sacred music within collegiate music study. His forthcoming book, Gospel Conducting and Pedagogy, is among the first comprehensive pedagogical texts devoted to the traditions, techniques, and performance practices of Gospel choral music, further establishing a scholarly framework for one of America’s most influential musical traditions.
Dr. Murdock’s contributions to music education have been recognized through numerous honors, including the 2021 GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year Award. He is also the recipient of the 2016 Connor Endowed Faculty Fellowship in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the 2018 Golden Tusk Award, the University of Arkansas’ 2019 Most Outstanding Faculty Member Award, and membership in the University of Arkansas Teaching Academy.
Maintaining an active international career as a conductor, soloist, scholar, and educator, Dr. Murdock has conducted the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony, and has appeared as a soloist with the Fort Smith Symphony, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and Southern Mississippi Opera. His commitment to scholarship and performance has taken him throughout the United States and around the world as a conductor, clinician, lecturer, and performer. Widely sought after in the field of choral music, he has conducted All-State and All-Region honor choirs and served as a featured clinician and conference headliner in 30 states and 19 countries.
In 2013, Dr. Murdock made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut with the Millington Chorale in a critically acclaimed performance of diverse repertoire. Since then, he has returned to Carnegie Hall on multiple occasions and has conducted in many of the world’s most distinguished concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
Equally at home in the classical and Gospel traditions, Dr. Murdock is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost conductors and pedagogues of Black sacred music. He has served on the conducting staff of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., and has collaborated with many of Gospel music’s most celebrated
artists, including Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood, Mary Mary, Marvin Winans, Marvin Sapp, Lisa Knowles, Kathy Taylor, and numerous others. His work has helped expand the presence of Gospel music within higher education while preserving its cultural, historical, and spiritual authenticity.
Dr. Murdock’s research examines cultural hegemony in choral music education, culturally responsive pedagogy, social justice in music education, and music in urban schools. His scholarship has been presented nationally and internationally, including invitations to the National Research Conference of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the World Conferences of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) in Glasgow, Scotland, and Helsinki, Finland. He serves on the editorial boards of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education and Visions of Research in Music Education. Through his research, teaching, conducting, and writing, he continues to advocate for more equitable, culturally responsive, and historically informed approaches to music education and choral performance.
Dr. Murdock holds the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Choral Conducting degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education from the University of Memphis. He is married to the Reverend R. Janae Pitts-Murdock, Senior Pastor of Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Together they are the proud parents of two sons, Jeffrey Allen Murdock III and John Patrick Alexander Murdock, and their goddaughter, Jasmine.
