Prior Learning Assessment
Prior Learning Assessment is a process for evaluating skills in order to award college credit for learning from Military Service, Training, CLEP (or other credit-by-exam programs) and the Experiential Learning Portfolio.
To see if PLA is right for you, try our Credit Predictor Tool and get started on your path to completing your degree.
Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to get their OFFICIAL SCORE SHEETS to the Department of Testing. We do not accept student copies of AP, CLEP or IB score sheets as proof for credit. All Learning Portfolio’s must be approved by the Director of Academic Enhancement.
All Prior Learning credits are subject to the total hour limitation of thirty (30) semester credit hours.
Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations and College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Tests should be presented for evaluation prior to the semester in which graduation is planned and/or during the last eighteen (18) hours required for graduation.
Students wishing to inquire about advanced placement must inquire at the Testing Office in Room 141 of Delco. Letter grades will not be awarded for advanced placement achievement, and the AP or CLEP credits will not be counted in the student’s cumulative GPA. Students receive only applicable credit hours for satisfactory achievement on AP or CLEP tests. Applicable AP credits received at other institutions may be applied toward degree plan requirements at PVAMU provided they were awarded as letter grades at the other institution or an official College Board transcript is sent to PVAMU designating the grade, or score, received on the AP or CLEP exam. AP scores or transfer credits cannot be taken from other University or College transcripts, and PVAMU does not accept scores submitted from students. Scores must be received from the College Board on an official CLEP Transcript or AP Student Grade Report. If a course has been taken and failed at Prairie View A&M University, it may not be replaced by a subsequent AP Examination. A student may take a CLEP exam to receive credit for a course previously failed at the University; however, the CLEP credit will not replace the failed grade on the student’s official transcript. If you have taken a course and received a D, taking a CLEP test will NOT give you credit for the class. If you are required to obtain a grade of C or better by your college, you will be required to take the course again. We cannot give you credit when you have the credit on your transcript.
Documentation of TSI Assessment Exemption or passage of all sections of the TSI Assessment, is required prior to receiving credit for Advanced Placement, College Level Examination (CLEP), or Correspondence and Extension Courses which will be applied toward degree requirements. If you know you have credit that needs to be awarded, do not procrastinate having your scores sent to us. It may take 6-8 weeks for us to receive the official scores from CLEP, AP or IB, an additional week to process your scores here in the office of Academic Enhancement, and another 2-4 weeks for your scores to be entered into the PVAMU system.
