Within a year, it evolved from a coordinating agency to a hands-on organization, helping local leadership in rural and small-town communities across the South participate in a variety of protests, as well as in political and economic organizing campaigns. This set SNCC apart from the civil rights mainstream of the 1960s. Its members, its youth, and its organizational independence enabled SNCC to remain close to grassroots currents that rapidly escalated the southern movement from sit-ins to freedom rides, and then from voter drives to political organizing.<\/p>\n<p>In the broadest sense, SNCC\u2019s legacy is the legacy of grassroots organizing. Within this frame, SNCC and the field organizers of CORE, SCLC, and the NAACP are really an interconnected force that in just one intense decade successfully challenged and changed America for the better. But there are specific aspects\u2014youth-led movement, MS Freedom Summer Project, articulation of \u201cBlack Power,\u201d interrogation of gender roles, and continued work of its veterans\u2014that belong to SNCC and perhaps use the SNCC experience in continuing efforts to fashion \u201ca more perfect union\u201d here in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Although SNCC, the organization, no longer exists, we believe that its legacy continues and needs to be brought forward in ways that continue the struggle for freedom, justice, and liberty. To that end, the SLP is undertaking a significant effort to archive SNCC documents digitally to make them easily available for use; encourage and assist in the development of books and other media by SNCC veterans with the idea of having the stories and interpretation of SNCC\u2019s work told by its veterans; and develop with colleges and universities a program of SNCC visiting professors and scholars who would in formal and informal ways interact with young people on campuses and take advantage of campus resources to begin telling the story as it should be told. Built into our efforts is the determination to see that our legacy, the legacy of the freedom struggle, is passed from our generation to future generations.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><style \/><figcaption><small>Photo Credit: Labor Community Strategy Center<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson is an Affrilachian (Black Appalachian) woman from the working class, born and raised in Southeast Tennessee. She is the first Black woman to serve as co-executive director of the Highlander Research &amp; Education Center in New Market, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of multiple leadership teams in the Movement for Black Lives, Henderson has thrown down on the Vision for Black Lives and the BREATHE Act. She has served on the governance council of the Southern Movement Assembly, the advisory committee of the National Bailout Collective, and is an active leader of The Frontline.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson, a long-time activist, has done work in movements fighting for workers, reproductive justice, LGBTQUIA+, and more. Additionally she is working around issues of mountaintop removal mining and environmental racism in central and southern Appalachia, and has served on the National Council of the Student Environmental Action Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson is the past president of the Black Affairs Association at East Tennessee State University and the Rho Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She holds a B.A. in English with a minor in African and African American History from East Tennessee State.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-body together computer science and social science\/humanities students to be trained by experts in inter-disciplinary methodologies centered in computing to address social issues affecting rural communities such as food insecurity and access to immediate healthcare. This project engages new and diverse perspectives in conversations about socially responsible technologies and computing by grappling with social issues impacting rural populations that are usually not considered in discussions on responsible computing. This project will provide computer science and humanities\/social sciences students with training and practical experience examining and developing computing-based solutions to social issues affecting rural communities. More specifically, student participants from Prairie View A&amp;M University, Texas&#8217;s oldest state- supported historically black university will utilize rural Waller County, where the school is within the realm of computer science but has much interdisciplinary potential when applied within the social sciences\/humanities. The ethics, ideas, and set of practices that undergird Responsible Computing provide a dynamic model by which computer science and humanities courses can be linked. At Prairie View A&amp;M University (PVAMU), Texas\u2019 oldest state supported Historically Black University, this process is already underway through the joint efforts of the Division of Social Sciences and Computer Science Department. Currently, Marco Robinson (History) and Sherri Frizell (Computer Science) lead this effort and during the spring semester 2024 linked four courses (two social sciences and two computer science) to develop modules that integrate Responsible Computing into the respective curriculums.<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\" data-ogsc=\"black\">The overall project titled \u201cConsidering Rural Communities and Issues through Socially Responsible Computing\u201d is three tiered to impact instruction, curriculum offerings, and community outreach. The first phase of the project entails instructors preparing the teach responsible computing in the humanities and computer science, creating learning modules for students to be informed, establishing relationships in the local community, and collecting data regarding issues impacting the local community and possible computing solutions.<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-carousel class=\"figure pull-right col-md-6\" style=\"padding: 15px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pvamu.edu\/simmonscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/197\/2021\/09\/melina-adbullah.jpg\" alt=\"Melina Abdullah\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Melina Abdullah is Professor of Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles and immediate past Department Chair. Dr. Abdullah earned her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Political Science and her B.A. from Howard University in African American Studies. She is a recognized expert on race, gender, class, and social movements. Abdullah is the author of numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, with subjects ranging from political coalition building to womanist mothering. She has also contributed to popular media outlets, including <em>The Root, Los Angeles Times, Truthdig, Los Angeles Sentinel, Los Angeles Progressive, The North Star,<\/em> and <em>BK Nation<\/em>. Professor Abdullah is a womanist scholar-activist, understanding the role that she plays in the academy as intrinsically linked to broader struggles for the liberation of oppressed people. Professor Abdullah is a leader in the fight for Ethnic Studies in the K-12 and university systems and was a part of the historic victories that made Ethnic Studies a requirement in the Los Angeles Unified School District (2014) and California State University (CSU) system (2020). Dr. Abdullah served on the CSU\u2019s Taskforce for the Advancement of Ethnic Studies and the Ethnic Studies Council Steering Committee. She was among the original group of organizers that convened to form Black Lives Matter and continues to serve as a Los Angeles chapter lead, policy team lead for the California chapters, and Co-Director of Black Lives Matter &#8211; Grassroots, the global formation for on-the-ground organizing. From 2014-2018, Dr. Abdullah was Los Angeles County Human Relations Commissioner, where she initiated and chaired the county-wide hearings on community experiences with policing and was instrumental in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People\u2019s Day. Melina is creator, host, and producer of the radio program <em>Move the Crowd<\/em> and co-host and co-producer of <em>Beautiful Struggle<\/em> both on 90.7FM KPFK, part of the Pacifica Radio Network. Dr. Abdullah also serves on boards for the Black Community, Clergy and Labor Alliance (BCCLA), California Faculty Association-Los Angeles, Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA-CAN), Muslim Delegates and Allies, National Council for Black Studies, the Reverence Project, and Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE). Melina is the recipient of many awards, most recently the 2021 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award from Loyola Marymount University, 2020 George Regas Peace Award, 2020 35<span class=\"s1\">th <\/span>California State Senate District Woman of the Year, 2019 Community Organizing Award presented by the Los Angeles African American Women\u2019s PAC, the 2019 Carpenter of Courage Award from Progressive Democrats, 2018 Community Service Award from National Council for Black Studies, 2017 Unsung Heroes Award from the Oscar Grant Foundation, 2017 Extraordinary Service Award from the African Heritage Studies Association, 2017 Justice Work Award from Beyond the Bars, 2017 Freedom Fighter Award from the NAACP, 2017 Activist Award presented by the National Association for Ethnic Studies, 2016 Racial Justice Award presented by the YWCA, 2016 Fannie Lou Hamer Award for outstanding community service presented by the Coalition of Mental Health Professionals, 2016 Fannie Lou Hamer Award presented by the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, 2016 Sacred Sistahs Award, 2016 California Teachers Association Human Rights Award, 2016 BCCLA Ella Baker Award, 2015 Freedom Now Award, and the 2015 Communitas Award. She was recognized by LA Weekly as one of the 10 most influential Los Angeles leaders, \u201cUrban Girl of the Year\u201d by <em>2UrbanGirls<\/em>, and one of the 15 \u201cFiercest Sisters\u201d of 2015 by <em>Fierce<\/em>. She has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, Fox Soul, TV One, ABC, PBS, Revolt TV, KTLA, KCET, BET, Free Speech TV, Al-Jazeera, and Spectrum News, and is featured in the films <em>(In)Visible Portraits, Hello Privilege &#8211; It\u2019s Me Chelsea, Waking the Sleeping Giant, 13<span class=\"s1\">th<\/span>, When Justice Isn\u2019t Just,<\/em> and <em>Justice or Else<\/em> and the television series <em>Good Trouble<\/em> and <em>Two Sides<\/em>. Melina is originally from Oakland, California.
