Dr. Tyrone Tanner Tyrone Tanner, Ed.D., Executive Director of Prairie View A&M University’s Northwest Houston Center and Professor in PVAMU’s Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, delivered a powerful and interactive presentation to more than 1,200 educators and staff for Beaumont Independent School District (BISD). The presentation focused on his research related to the best practices to reach diverse learners, close opportunity gaps, increase parental and community involvement, and reduce classroom discipline referrals in P-12 (kindergarten-12th grade) education.

“After sharing my research with more than 250,000 educators over the years, most educators do not believe they are lowering expectations for Black and Brown students. As such, we really have to test or challenge our views…How do we know what we truly believe in a world that has gone through great lengths to influence what we think we are seeing,” he said. “Black and Brown children are more than capable of learning with exceptionalism. We simply have to fix our beliefs, which influence how we teach, what we teach, and where we place our resources.”

Tanner was asked to return and share more of his research with administrators, teachers, staff, and parents associated with BISD.

The district also purchased 150 copies of Tanner’s book, “Culturally Responsive Educational Theories: A Practical Guide with Case Studies for Improving the Academic Performance of Diverse Learners.”

“The book challenges the views of educators and classroom practices that get in the way of learners experiencing success in schools while providing effective, culturally responsive pedagogical strategies,” he said.

Tanner is scheduled to speak at the Houston Museum of African American Culture on Feb. 13, covering a similar topic: “What You Need to Know to Ensure People of Color Experience Success in School.” Click here to watch Dr. Tanner’s lecture.
