Prairie View A&M University has established an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) that meets all federal requirements, as defined in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), the Public Health Service Policy (PHS), and the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The IACUC is responsible for the oversight, evaluation, and assurance of compliance for the institution’s animal care and use program and A&M System components as outlined in the PHS Assurance (PVAMU), AWA, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
The purpose of IACUC inspections is to ensure that all animal housing facilities are managed and maintained according to PHS, USDA, and Prairie View A&M policies.
The Attending Veterinarian (AV) is responsible for the health and well-being of all animals used for research, teaching, and testing. Currently, the executive director of the Comparative Medicine Program serves as the Attending Veterinarian. See a one-page PDF description of the roles of the attending veterinarian.
The IACUC committee reports to the University’s institutional official (Vice President for Research) and serve Prairie View A&M researchers and educators, as well as additional researchers and educators from The Prairie View A&M University System members based on signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs). The Office of Research Compliance and Biosafety’s Animal Welfare Assurance Program supports the IACUC committees. For any questions about which IACUC provides services for your research or teaching, contact your research administrator.
The Office of Research provides additional information and resources to help investigators with the use and care of animals in research and teaching:
