TITLE<\/strong>: EFFECTIVE TRAFFIC ROUTING UNDER DISASTROUS EVENTS THROUGH MACHINE LEARNING<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT:\u00a0<\/strong>Disastrous events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods routinely disrupt transportation networks, preventing emergency response, evacuation, and the delivery of critical supplies. Conventional optimization-based routing methods offer strong theoretical guarantees but cannot scale and are often too slow to support time-sensitive decision-making during disaster, while prior machine learning approaches to disaster routing have largely prioritized prediction accuracy over inference speed and data efficiency. This thesis investigates whether lightweight machine learning models can deliver both competitive routing accuracy and superior inference speed when trained on limited data, addressing a practical gap between existing research and real-world deployment needs. The road network is modeled as a synthetic abstraction of the Houston metropolitan highway system, comprising 22 nodes and 38 bidirectional edges, and the routing problem is formulated as a Minimum-Cost Flow problem. Disaster impact is simulated by systematically perturbing edge costs across twelve road groups, yielding 531,441 distinct disaster scenarios used to generate training and testing data. Lightweight machine learning models such as Random Forest with Regressor Chain, Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM), Transformer, and a policy-gradient Reinforcement Learning model, are benchmarked against classical optimization and approximation algorithms such as Linear Programming Relaxation, Successive Shortest Path, and Cost-Scaling Push Relabel. Results show that the BiLSTM model achieves the highest routing accuracy among the learning-based methods, reaching 75.26% correct routing with only 30\\% of available training data, while the Reinforcement Learning model achieves the fastest inference time at a moderate accuracy trade-off. All machine learning models substantially outperform classical algorithms in inference speed, though the latter retain guaranteed optimality. These findings demonstrate that selective lightweight machine learning models can serve as practical, time-efficient alternatives for disaster-impacted traffic routing where rapid decision making is essential.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: WHY THEY STAY: CAREER DEVELOPMENT, PERSONAL GROWTH, AND THE RETENTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION GENERAL STAFF<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Higher education general staff (HEGS) are critical to the operational continuity and institutional success of U.S. colleges and universities, yet their retention remains a persistent challenge. While faculty development has received sustained attention, HEGS have historically lacked equivalent access to career advancement and personal growth opportunities. This study examined how perceived access to career development and personal growth opportunities were associated with job satisfaction and turnover intention among HEGS and tested whether job satisfaction mediated these relationships. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, this study hypothesized that career development and personal growth would predict turnover intention both directly and indirectly through job satisfaction. Data were collected from 198 non-faculty higher education staff across U.S. institutions using an online survey administered through Qualtrics and distributed via CloudResearch Connect. Career Development was operationalized as a composite of career path clarity, training, and mentoring; Personal Growth was operationalized as meaningful work\/sense of purpose. Job satisfaction was measured using a short-form adaptation of the Brayfield-Rothe (1951) scale, and turnover intention was measured using the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS-6; Bothma & Roodt, 2013). Data were analyzed using Stata, including reliability analysis, correlation, and bootstrapped mediation regression. All four hypotheses were supported. Career Development and Personal Growth each significantly predicted turnover intention, and both effects were fully mediated by job satisfaction, a pattern that held even when the two predictors were tested simultaneously in a combined model. Notably, no statistically significant difference emerged between the strength of the two mediated pathways, indicating that career development and personal growth contributed comparably to job satisfaction and, through it, to turnover intention. These findings suggest that institutional investment in career development and personal growth opportunities is associated with HEGS retention primarily through its relationship with job satisfaction, rather than through any direct pathway independent of it. The results offer HR leaders and institutional planners an evidence-based rationale for pursuing balanced, rather than singular, investment in structured career development and meaning-oriented job design as retention strategies for this historically underexamined workforce.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: BEYOND BORDERS: LIVED EXPERIENCES OF STUDY ABROAD AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON BELONGING, MOTIVATION, AND DEGREE PROGRESSION<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>This qualitative phenomenological study explored how students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) described their study abroad experiences and how those experiences influenced their academic motivation and persistence toward degree completion. Guided by Tinto\u2019s Theory of Student Integration and Astin\u2019s Theory of Student Involvement, the study explored the lived experiences of students who participated in semester-long, ship-based, and short-term faculty-led study abroad programs in locations including Qatar, Ghana, Uganda, Belize, Greece, Barbados, the Bahamas and the Semester at Sea. The study was conducted at a midsized public university in the southern United States. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit ten participants who had completed study abroad experience. Data were collected through Semi- structured, one-on-one interviews with participants and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that students described study abroad as transformative, immersive, and personally meaningful. Participants reported that their international experiences expanded their cultural awareness, strengthened their independence and confidence, and deepened their appreciation for global perspectives. The findings also indicated that study abroad positively influenced academic motivation by making learning feel more relevant and connected to real-world contexts. Students explained that exposure to new teaching styles, unfamiliar environments, and diverse communities increased their engagement with coursework and their appreciation for educational opportunities. In addition, participants described study abroad as contributing to their persistence and commitment to completing their degrees by strengthening their self-efficacy, clarifying their academic and professional goals, and increasing their desire to continue pursuing higher education. The study suggests that study abroad serves as a high-impact educational experience that supports the academic, personal, and developmental growth of HBCU students. The findings highlight the value of expanding access to intentional, well-supported global learning opportunities that foster both student success and degree completion.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: RACIALIZED SURVEILLANCE AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH: A SERIAL MODERATED MEDIATION MODEL OF POLICE CONTACT, EMOTIONAL RESPONSE, AND TRAUMA SYMPTOMS<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Introduction: This study examined the psychological implications of adolescent police contact using a serial moderated mediation framework grounded in Critical Race Theory, Vile Vigilance Theory, and developmental psychopathology. Drawing on data from Waves 6 and 7 of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), the study investigated whether the qualitative intrusiveness of police encounters was associated with young adult internalizing outcomes through adolescent emotional responses and police-related trauma symptoms. The analytic sample consisted of 550 youth with complete data on key study variables. Method: Police contact was operationalized as a composite index of intrusiveness capturing coercive, stigmatizing, and force-related features of encounters. Emotional responses during police encounters and subsequent trauma symptoms were assessed during adolescence, and internalizing outcomes in young adulthood were measured using diagnostic indicators derived from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), summarized as a count of anxiety and depression indicators. Regression-based conditional process modeling with bootstrapped indirect effects was used to test hypothesized pathways, along with sensitivity and moderation analyses. Results: Greater police intrusiveness was significantly associated with heightened negative emotional responses during encounters and increased police-related trauma symptoms. Negative emotional response was also significantly associated with trauma symptoms, supporting a proximal affective pathway linking intrusive encounters to sustained distress. However, no direct or indirect effects of intrusiveness, emotional response, or trauma symptoms on young adult internalizing outcomes were statistically significant. Sensitivity analyses using police contact frequency did not reproduce this pattern, and moderation by gender and race\u2013sex identity profiles was not statistically significant. Findings: Findings indicate that intrusive police encounters are associated with meaningful emotional and trauma-related responses during adolescence but are not associated with diagnostic-level internalizing outcomes in young adulthood in the current sample. Results highlight a distinction between proximal psychological responses and distal clinical outcomes and underscore the importance of assessing the qualitative characteristics of police encounters. Notably, encounter intrusiveness\u2014but not frequency\u2014was associated with adolescents\u2019 emotional and trauma-related responses, emphasizing the importance of how encounters are experienced rather than how often they occur.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS AND STRUCTURAL PRIORITIZATION OF CANDIDATE BACTERIAL TRANSPOSABLE ELEMENTS FROM LARGE-SCALE GENOMIC DATASETS<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT:\u00a0<\/strong>Transposable elements are mobile DNA sequences that contribute to bacterial genome variation, gene disruption, and genome rearrangement. Large-scale computational tools can identify thousands of candidate insertion sequences and related transposable elements, but these outputs often require additional filtering before candidates can be interpreted biologically. This thesis develops a computational workflow for organizing, validating, and prioritizing candidate e-coli bacterial transposable elements from TIGER-derived genomic data. TIGER (Target\/Integrative Genetic Element Retriever) is a tool, developed by Sandia National Laboratories, that discovers and maps mobile genetic elements, such as transposable elements and genomic islands, in bacterial and archaeal genomes with high accuracy. The workflow began with a large candidate dataset of 176,709 entries, discovered by TIGER for e-coli genomes, and a reduced working set of 35,451 candidates. Candidate records were linked back to TIGER metadata using contig names and coordinate information, allowing sequence entries to relate to genomic location, neighboring genes, and predicted element boundaries. MMseqs2 clustering was then used to group related candidate sequences under strict and relaxed similarity settings. BLAST-based screening and ISFinder comparisons were employed to evaluate whether candidate groups showed similarity to previously documented insertion sequences. ISFinder is a dedicated database for bacterial insertion sequences. Structural validation was also performed by examining terminal inverted repeats, direct repeats, candidate length, and sequence ambiguity. The analysis showed that candidate prioritization requires multiple types of evidence. Clustering helped organize large datasets into interpretable groups, while structural validation helped identify candidates with features expected of insertion sequences. However, BLAST and ISFinder comparisons also showed that lack of a local database hit alone is not sufficient evidence of novelty. Follow-up review indicated that local database construction, candidate sequence extraction, boundary selection, and external reference checks are important for correctly interpreting candidate status. In summary, this thesis generated a reproducible computational framework for reducing large transposable element candidate datasets into smaller, better-supported groups for biological follow-up. Rather than confirming novelty from a single method, the workflow combines similarity, structure, genomic context, and database comparison to prioritize candidates for future validation.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MIXED GREEN NANO CATALYSTS FOR AMMONIA SYNTHESIS<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Ammonia, (NH3), is a chemical that is most used industrially for uses that sustain millions of people, such as in the agricultural industry in fertilizers or in other potential applications like energy storage and power generation. This chemical is possible to be produced at a grand scale because of the Haber-Bosch Process developed in 1913. While the Haber-Bosch Process is renowned for the ammonia synthesis process and the effects it has had on the world over the past century, it is a significant contributor of around 1-2% CO2 emissions annually and the Iron (Fe) catalyst requires extreme conditions for the reaction to take place. In turn, recent research has pivoted in exploring mild conditioned methods of ammonia synthesis. In addition, the synthesis and characterization of a green mixed metal nano catalyst, Iron Tungsten (FeW), for photocatalytic NH3 synthesis. The nano catalyst was characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and redox properties evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The results show the qualities such as size, redox potential and surface chemistry of the nano catalysts that could determine how it plays a role in ammonia synthesis. The quantification of ammonia from the Photocatalytic synthesis was measured using an Ion Selective Electrode. Results show the mixed metal nano catalyst was effective in the ammonia synthesis process.<\/p>\n
