TITLE<\/strong>: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MIXED GREEN NANO CATALYSTS FOR AMMONIA SYNTHESIS<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Ammonia, (NH3), is a chemical that is most used industrially for uses that sustain millions of people, such as in the agricultural industry in fertilizers or in other potential applications like energy storage and power generation. This chemical is possible to be produced at a grand scale because of the Haber-Bosch Process developed in 1913. While the Haber-Bosch Process is renowned for the ammonia synthesis process and the effects it has had on the world over the past century, it is a significant contributor of around 1-2% CO2 emissions annually and the Iron (Fe) catalyst requires extreme conditions for the reaction to take place. In turn, recent research has pivoted in exploring mild conditioned methods of ammonia synthesis. In addition, the synthesis and characterization of a green mixed metal nano catalyst, Iron Tungsten (FeW), for photocatalytic NH3 synthesis. The nano catalyst was characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and redox properties evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The results show the qualities such as size, redox potential and surface chemistry of the nano catalysts that could determine how it plays a role in ammonia synthesis. The quantification of ammonia from the Photocatalytic synthesis was measured using an Ion Selective Electrode. Results show the mixed metal nano catalyst was effective in the ammonia synthesis process.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: MORE THAN A MOVEMENT: THE MENTAL HEALTH TOLL OF ACTIVISM AND THE SHIELD OF SOCIAL SUPPORT AT HBCUs<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Student activism has historically contributed to sociopolitical change, with college campuses serving as important contexts for civic engagement and identity development (Ballard et al., 2024; Cabrera et al., 2017; Conner, 2020). At Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), activism is often connected to students lived experiences and efforts to challenge systemic inequities (Byon et al., 2022; Patterson, 2021). Although activism may promote empowerment and collective identity, sustained advocacy may also contribute to psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, particularly among students of color (Chen et al., 2024; Hope et al., 2018). However, limited research has examined culturally relevant protective factors that may influence the relationship between activism and psychological distress among HBCU students. The primary objective of this study was to examine whether perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others served as a moderator of the association between activism and psychological distress. Participants included 314 students recruited from an HBCU psychology research pool. Participants completed measures assessing activism, perceived social support, anxiety, depression, everyday discrimination, and demographic characteristics. Multiple regression and moderation analyses were conducted using SPSS. Results indicated that greater activism involvement was associated with higher anxiety (p < .001) and depressive symptoms (p < .001). Among the three sources of perceived social support, only family support was associated with lower anxiety (p = .003) and depressive symptoms (p < .001). No evidence was found that perceived social support moderated the association between activism and psychological distress (all ps = .112\u2013.703). Findings suggest that activism may be associated with increased psychological distress among HBCU students, while family support may serve as an important protective factor. These findings contribute to the limited literature examining activism, mental health, and culturally relevant sources of support within HBCU settings and underscore the need for supportive resources that foster student well-being.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: SHARED IDENTITY, SHARED TRUST: THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP REPRESENTATION AND ADVISOR RACE IN SHAPING MINORITY INVESTMENT PARTICIPATION<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Persistent racial disparities in stock market participation constrain wealth accumulation among African American and Latino households.\u00a0 This study examined how two forms of representation, a firm\u2019s cultural-sensitivity disclosure (an organizational signal) and the advisor\u2019s racial identity, shape trust and influence investor participation among these groups.\u00a0 Drawing on social identity theory, signaling theory, and the impression-formation\/stereotype-reconciliation literature, this study hypothesized that disclosure and a minority advisor independently increase trust, that the cues would be complementary, and that trust would mediate their impact on participation . A 2\u00a0 \u00d7 2 between-subjects experiment with African American and Latino adults tested predictions using ANOVA, ANCOVA, and PROCESS mediation models. Cultural-sensitivity disclosure significantly increased trust, fully mediated by perceived firm inclusivity, and trust transmitted this effect to investment participation. Advisor race affected neither trust nor participation, yielding an unsupported prediction. Perceived inclusivity and trust emerge as the mechanisms linking organizational representation to minority investment participation.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: EXPLORING THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG METABOLIC HEALTH, DIETARY QUALITY, LIFESTYLE FACTORS, AND ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASURES IN ADULTS WITH OBESITY<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Obesity impacts more than 40% of adults in the United States and is connected to a heightened risk of metabolic disorders, heart conditions, and type 2 diabetes. The relationships among metabolic health, dietary quality, lifestyle habits, sociodemographic characteristics, and body composition in obese individuals remain poorly elucidated, hindering the development of tailored nutritional therapies. The objective of this cross-sectional pilot study was to examine the relationships among metabolic health indicators, dietary quality (evaluated using the Short Healthy Eating Index and 24-hour dietary recalls), lifestyle factors, anthropometric measurements, and sociodemographic characteristics in adults with obesity. Fifteen individuals with obesity (BMI =30 kg\/m\u00b2) underwent single assessments encompassing blood collection for metabolic markers (lipid profile, HbA1c, fasting glucose), anthropometric measurements (height, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis), and self-reported dietary and lifestyle information. Correlations were analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation, and group differences in sociodemographic and lifestyle categories were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with the Benjamini-Hochberg correction for multiple comparisons. The sample (N=15) consisted primarily of females (67%) and individuals identifying as Black\/African American (73%), with a mean BMI of 35.74 kg\/m\u00b2 and suboptimal overall dietary quality (mean sHEI total: 45.89 out of 100). Unadjusted Spearman correlations indicated negative connections between muscle mass percentage and triglycerides (? = -0.56, p = 0.030) and VLDL cholesterol (? = -0.53, p = 0.041), as well as between visceral fat percentage and triglycerides (? = -0.53, p = 0.044). Group comparisons revealed significant unadjusted disparities by sex in body fat % (p < 0.001), muscle mass percentage (p < 0.001), and visceral fat percentage (p = 0.003), alongside relationships between physical activity and body composition (p = 0.014-0.029). Although directionally aligned with physiological expectations, no relationships remained significant after correction for multiple comparisons, possibly due to inadequate statistical power stemming from the small sample size. The identified patterns-specifically the inverse correlations between muscle mass and lipid markers, as well as the interactions between physical activity and advantageous body composition-indicate biologically plausible links that need exploration in larger, sufficiently powered research.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: IFRU VEG CART: A PILOT STUDY OF A MOBILE PRODUCE DELIVERY PROGRAM AND FOOD INSECURITY AMONG STUDENTS AT AN HBCU<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Food insecurity and inadequate fruit and vegetable (F\/V) consumption remain major public health concerns among students in college, especially those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where structural inequities and limited campus resources increase vulnerability. This mixed-methods, quasi-experimental pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a 6-week mobile produce delivery intervention at Prairie View A&M University, a rural HBCU in Texas. 100 students in a convenience sample were allocated randomly to home\/residential\/mobile delivery (n=50) or on-campus pickup (n=50). The intervention included weekly fresh produce distribution valued at $15 per participant, two live cooking demonstrations with recorded sessions, weekly asynchronous nutrition education, and MyPlate-based messaging informed by Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Socio-Ecological Model. Quantitative outcomes measured at baseline and endline included skin carotenoid levels (Veggie Meter\u00ae), the Healthy Eating Index-2015 supported by 24-hour dietary recalls for diet quality, the Short 10-Item Fruit and Vegetable Dietary Assessment Tool, food security status using the USDA six-item module, nutrition knowledge, and anthropometric measures. Qualitative data from pre- and post-focus groups and open-ended surveys explored participant experiences, perceived barriers, and program satisfaction. Retention was 97%. Both delivery methods demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability, with home\/residential\/mobile delivery participants reporting greater convenience, reduced transportation barriers (62.0% vs. 28.0%, p<.001), and improved feelings of safety (46.0% vs. 20.0%, p=.006). Significant improvements were observed in both groups for Healthy Eating Index scores (pickup: +21.61, p<.001; home\/residential\/mobile delivery: +16.99, p=.001), nutrition knowledge (pickup: +2.60, p<.001; home\/residential\/mobile delivery: +3.28, p<.001), self-reported F\/V intake (pickup: +0.74 servings, p<.001; home\/residential\/mobile delivery: +0.87 servings, p<.001), and food security status (pickup: -2.00, p<.001; home\/residential\/mobile delivery: -2.82, p<.001). Skin carotenoid levels increased modestly but were not statistically significant. Program fidelity was high, with completion rates of 97.3% for home\/residential\/mobile delivery and 91.7% for pickup. Overall, 99.0% would recommend the program.<\/p>\n

Qualitative findings indicated improved produce access, enhanced cooking confidence, reduced stigma surrounding food assistance, and a strong preference for home\/residential\/mobile delivery because of convenience and reduced transportation burden. Persistent barriers included limited healthy food options, time constraints, and inadequate cooking facilities. Findings support scalability.<\/p>\n

TITLE<\/strong>: ASSESSING RURAL FOOD ACCESS IN SOUTHEAST TEXAS USING THE NUTRITION ENVIRONMENT MEASURES SURVEY<\/p>\n

ABSTRACT: <\/strong>Food insecurity remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with Texas reporting one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation. Residents of rural low-income and low-access (LI\/LA) communities often face additional structural barriers to obtaining healthy foods, including limited transportation options and reduced access to supermarkets. The Nutrition Environment Measures Survey for Corner Stores (NEMS-CS) is a validated instrument that has\u00a0 been widely used to evaluate healthy food access in urban food retail environments over the past two decades. Limited research, however has examined food environments within rural LI\/LA communities using this instrument. This study sought to compare small food retailers located in rural (51) and urban (51) LI\/LA census tracts. The NEMS-CS Scoring Tool provides an overall score for each store (0-61) as well as a food availability score (0-30), quality score (0-6), and pricing score (-9 to 18). A cross-sectional environmental assessment was conducted among 102 small food retailers distributed equally between rural and urban LI\/LA communities. Census tracts were identified using the USDA Food Access Research Atlas then store locations identified using GPS and ground-truthing. Descriptive statistics and comparative analyses were employed to evaluate differences between rural and urban stores, between different types of stores (Dollar stores, independent mini markets and gas stations) as well as between the 10 rural counties visited, based on store scores. Findings indicated that overall, NEMS-CS scores were low across both settings but no statistically significant differences were seen between them. Overall scores were 12.2 and 11.4 out of 61 possible points for urban and rural stores, respectively. Availability scores were 10.7 and 10.2 (out of 30) for urban and rural stores, respectively, and quality scores were 1.9 and 1.3 (out of 6) for urban and rural stores, respectively. Price scores remained extremely low for urban and rural. Overall these results indicate that in Southeast Texas poor access to high quality food is persistent and similar in both rural and urban areas of LI\/LA.<\/p>\n
