Drawing on data from Waves 6 and 7 of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), the study investigated whether the qualitative intrusiveness of police encounters was associated with young adult internalizing outcomes through adolescent emotional responses and police-related trauma symptoms. The analytic sample consisted of 550 youth with complete data on key study variables. Method: Police contact was operationalized as a composite index of intrusiveness capturing coercive, stigmatizing, and force-related features of encounters. Emotional responses during police encounters and subsequent trauma symptoms were assessed during adolescence, and internalizing outcomes in young adulthood were measured using diagnostic indicators derived from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), summarized as a count of anxiety and depression indicators. Regression-based conditional process modeling with bootstrapped indirect effects was used to test hypothesized pathways, along with sensitivity and moderation analyses. Results: Greater police intrusiveness was significantly associated with heightened negative emotional responses during encounters and increased police-related trauma symptoms. Negative emotional response was also significantly associated with trauma symptoms, supporting a proximal affective pathway linking intrusive encounters to sustained distress. However, no direct or indirect effects of intrusiveness, emotional response, or trauma symptoms on young adult internalizing outcomes were statistically significant. Sensitivity analyses using police contact frequency did not reproduce this pattern, and moderation by gender and race–sex identity profiles was not statistically significant. Findings: Findings indicate that intrusive police encounters are associated with meaningful emotional and trauma-related responses during adolescence but are not associated with diagnostic-level internalizing outcomes in young adulthood in the current sample. Results highlight a distinction between proximal psychological responses and distal clinical outcomes and underscore the importance of assessing the qualitative characteristics of police encounters. Notably, encounter intrusiveness—but not frequency—was associated with adolescents’ emotional and trauma-related responses, emphasizing the importance of how encounters are experienced rather than how often they occur.

Keywords: Longitudinal design, police contact, emotional response, trauma symptoms, internalizing outcomes, moderated CHAIR: Dr. Noushin Ghaffari

TITLE: COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS AND STRUCTURAL PRIORITIZATION OF CANDIDATE BACTERIAL TRANSPOSABLE ELEMENTS FROM LARGE-SCALE GENOMIC DATASETS

ABSTRACT: Transposable elements are mobile DNA sequences that contribute to bacterial genome variation, gene disruption, and genome rearrangement. Large-scale computational tools can identify thousands of candidate insertion sequences and related transposable elements, but these outputs often require additional filtering before candidates can be interpreted biologically. This thesis develops a computational workflow for organizing, validating, and prioritizing candidate e-coli bacterial transposable elements from TIGER-derived genomic data. TIGER (Target/Integrative Genetic Element Retriever) is a tool, developed by Sandia National Laboratories, that discovers and maps mobile genetic elements, such as transposable elements and genomic islands, in bacterial and archaeal genomes with high accuracy. The workflow began with a large candidate dataset of 176,709 entries, discovered by TIGER for e-coli genomes, and a reduced working set of 35,451 candidates. Candidate records were linked back to TIGER metadata using contig names and coordinate information, allowing sequence entries to relate to genomic location, neighboring genes, and predicted element boundaries. MMseqs2 clustering was then used to group related candidate sequences under strict and relaxed similarity settings. BLAST-based screening and ISFinder comparisons were employed to evaluate whether candidate groups showed similarity to previously documented insertion sequences. ISFinder is a dedicated database for bacterial insertion sequences. Structural validation was also performed by examining terminal inverted repeats, direct repeats, candidate length, and sequence ambiguity. The analysis showed that candidate prioritization requires multiple types of evidence. Clustering helped organize large datasets into interpretable groups, while structural validation helped identify candidates with features expected of insertion sequences. However, BLAST and ISFinder comparisons also showed that lack of a local database hit alone is not sufficient evidence of novelty. Follow-up review indicated that local database construction, candidate sequence extraction, boundary selection, and external reference checks are important for correctly interpreting candidate status. In summary, this thesis generated a reproducible computational framework for reducing large transposable element candidate datasets into smaller, better-supported groups for biological follow-up. Rather than confirming novelty from a single method, the workflow combines similarity, structure, genomic context, and database comparison to prioritize candidates for future validation.

Keywords: Bacterial genomics, BLAST, direct repeats, insertion sequences, ISFinder, MMseqs2, structural validation, transposable elements.

Room Location: S.R. CHAIR: Dr. Harshica Fernando

TITLE: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MIXED GREEN NANO CATALYSTS FOR AMMONIA SYNTHESIS

ABSTRACT: Ammonia, (NH3), is a chemical that is most used industrially for uses that sustain millions of people, such as in the agricultural industry in fertilizers or in other potential applications like energy storage and power generation. This chemical is possible to be produced at a grand scale because of the Haber-Bosch Process developed in 1913. While the Haber-Bosch Process is renowned for the ammonia synthesis process and the effects it has had on the world over the past century, it is a significant contributor of around 1-2% CO2 emissions annually and the Iron (Fe) catalyst requires extreme conditions for the reaction to take place. In turn, recent research has pivoted in exploring mild conditioned methods of ammonia synthesis. In addition, the synthesis and characterization of a green mixed metal nano catalyst, Iron Tungsten (FeW), for photocatalytic NH3 synthesis. The nano catalyst was characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and redox properties evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The results show the qualities such as size, redox potential and surface chemistry of the nano catalysts that could determine how it plays a role in ammonia synthesis. The quantification of ammonia from the Photocatalytic synthesis was measured using an Ion Selective Electrode. Results show the mixed metal nano catalyst was effective in the ammonia synthesis process.

Keywords: Nano catalyst, Ammonia Synthesis, Photocatalytic, Dextrose, Mixed Metal, Green Synthesis

Room Location: New Science Building, Room 203

"slide_template_v7":"
[1296
post-9540","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-main-events","cat_main-events
],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
https://www.pvamu.edu/graduateschool/event/feyisayo-tahira-oluwalana-masters-thesis-defense-tuesday-july-28-2026-1100-am-central-time/

COMMITTEE CHAIR: Dr. Temilola Salami

TITLE: MORE THAN A MOVEMENT: THE MENTAL HEALTH TOLL OF ACTIVISM AND THE SHIELD OF SOCIAL SUPPORT AT HBCUs

ABSTRACT: Student activism has historically contributed to sociopolitical change, with college campuses serving as important contexts for civic engagement and identity development (Ballard et al., 2024; Cabrera et al., 2017; Conner, 2020). At Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), activism is often connected to students lived experiences and efforts to challenge systemic inequities (Byon et al., 2022; Patterson, 2021). Although activism may promote empowerment and collective identity, sustained advocacy may also contribute to psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, particularly among students of color (Chen et al., 2024; Hope et al., 2018). However, limited research has examined culturally relevant protective factors that may influence the relationship between activism and psychological distress among HBCU students. The primary objective of this study was to examine whether perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others served as a moderator of the association between activism and psychological distress. Participants included 314 students recruited from an HBCU psychology research pool. Participants completed measures assessing activism, perceived social support, anxiety, depression, everyday discrimination, and demographic characteristics. Multiple regression and moderation analyses were conducted using SPSS. Results indicated that greater activism involvement was associated with higher anxiety (p < .001) and depressive symptoms (p < .001). Among the three sources of perceived social support, only family support was associated with lower anxiety (p = .003) and depressive symptoms (p < .001). No evidence was found that perceived social support moderated the association between activism and psychological distress (all ps = .112–.703). Findings suggest that activism may be associated with increased psychological distress among HBCU students, while family support may serve as an important protective factor. These findings contribute to the limited literature examining activism, mental health, and culturally relevant sources of support within HBCU settings and underscore the need for supportive resources that foster student well-being.

Keywords: Student activism, social support, mental health, HBCUs, psychological distress

Zoom Link:
<a CHAIR: Dr. Anish Shankar Menon

TITLE: SHARED IDENTITY, SHARED TRUST: THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP REPRESENTATION AND ADVISOR RACE IN SHAPING MINORITY INVESTMENT PARTICIPATION

ABSTRACT: Persistent racial disparities in stock market participation constrain wealth accumulation among African American and Latino households. This study examined how two forms of representation, a firm’s cultural-sensitivity disclosure (an organizational signal) and the advisor’s racial identity, shape trust and influence investor participation among these groups. Drawing on social identity theory, signaling theory, and the impression-formation/stereotype-reconciliation literature, this study hypothesized that disclosure and a minority advisor independently increase trust, that the cues would be complementary, and that trust would mediate their impact on participation . A 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment with African American and Latino adults tested predictions using ANOVA, ANCOVA, and PROCESS mediation models. Cultural-sensitivity disclosure significantly increased trust, fully mediated by perceived firm inclusivity, and trust transmitted this effect to investment participation. Advisor race affected neither trust nor participation, yielding an unsupported prediction. Perceived inclusivity and trust emerge as the mechanisms linking organizational representation to minority investment participation.

Keywords: Cultural sensitivity, trust, investment intentions, salience, advisor, identity

Room Location: Northwest Campus, Room 204

"slide_template_v7":"
[1296
post-9533","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-main-events","cat_main-events
],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
https://www.pvamu.edu/graduateschool/event/prince-dunyo-masters-thesis-defense-wednesday-july-22-2026-100-pm-central-time/

COMMITTEE CHAIR: Dr. Janet Antwi

TITLE: EXPLORING THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG METABOLIC HEALTH, DIETARY QUALITY, LIFESTYLE FACTORS, AND ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASURES IN ADULTS WITH OBESITY

ABSTRACT: Obesity impacts more than 40% of adults in the United States and is connected to a heightened risk of metabolic disorders, heart conditions, and type 2 diabetes. The relationships among metabolic health, dietary quality, lifestyle habits, sociodemographic characteristics, and body composition in obese individuals remain poorly elucidated, hindering the development of tailored nutritional therapies. The objective of this cross-sectional pilot study was to examine the relationships among metabolic health indicators, dietary quality (evaluated using the Short Healthy Eating Index and 24-hour dietary recalls), lifestyle factors, anthropometric measurements, and sociodemographic characteristics in adults with obesity. Fifteen individuals with obesity (BMI =30 kg/m²) underwent single assessments encompassing blood collection for metabolic markers (lipid profile, HbA1c, fasting glucose), anthropometric measurements (height, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumference, body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis), and self-reported dietary and lifestyle information. Correlations were analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation, and group differences in sociodemographic and lifestyle categories were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with the Benjamini-Hochberg correction for multiple comparisons. The sample (N=15) consisted primarily of females (67%) and individuals identifying as Black/African American (73%), with a mean BMI of 35.74 kg/m² and suboptimal overall dietary quality (mean sHEI total: 45.89 out of 100). Unadjusted Spearman correlations indicated negative connections between muscle mass percentage and triglycerides (? = -0.56, p = 0.030) and VLDL cholesterol (? = -0.53, p = 0.041), as well as between visceral fat percentage and triglycerides (? = -0.53, p = 0.044). Group comparisons revealed significant unadjusted disparities by sex in body fat % (p < 0.001), muscle mass percentage (p < 0.001), and visceral fat percentage (p = 0.003), alongside relationships between physical activity and body composition (p = 0.014-0.029). Although directionally aligned with physiological expectations, no relationships remained significant after correction for multiple comparisons, possibly due to inadequate statistical power stemming from the small sample size. The identified patterns-specifically the inverse correlations between muscle mass and lipid markers, as well as the interactions between physical activity and advantageous body composition-indicate biologically plausible links that need exploration in larger, sufficiently powered research.

Keywords: Obesity, metabolic health, anthropometry, lifestyle habits, body composition, short healthy eating index

Room Location: Agriculture Business Multipurpose Building, Room 221

OR

Zoom Link:
https://pvpanther.zoom.us/j/91547598880?pwd=4RLAHFaK1Css9IqDYb0swdNaVjWS2G.1

Meeting ID: 915 4759 8880
Passcode: 619093

"slide_template_v7":"
[1296
post-9530","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-main-events","cat_main-events
],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
