SWINIR (Shifted Window Image Restoration) is the current best performing deep learning model for increasing the resolution of images; however, mapping its computation pipeline to hardware is challenging due to its hierarchical attention structure and the computational complexity of core operations such as Softmax, dot-product accumulation, and exponential evaluation. This work investigates hardware-efficient approaches to implement these core functions to enable practical deployment of SWINIR on resource-constrained platforms. A detailed review of existing accelerator designs is presented, focusing on optimizations for the AI functions processing. For example, various techniques for implementing the exponential function are examined; including lookup tables, CORDIC, and logarithmic base-2 approximation methods. This work identifies the use of BRAM LUTs to store exponential values or to store the 2(f ractions) part when using Base-2 of the natural log approach; as a limitation to how much tiled processing can be performed; and its approximating methods as a limitation to quality, and adopts a fourth-order Maclaurin series approximation for the exponential function as a balanced solution between computational cost, accuracy, speed, and hardware area. A correction strategy is introduced to mitigate approximation distortion within the attention computation range, enabling efficient fixed-point hardware realization without large lookup tables or slow iterative units. By avoiding floating-point division through range normalization strategies, the proposed approach reduces both resource usage and latency; reducing computational complexity and increasing throughput in the softmax vectors per second compared to using existing approaches. This work presents a faster realization of the transformer computations. This work also introduces branching into the systolic additions module for additional speed from the additions module. This work provides the architectural foundation for a hardware implementation of SWINIR targeting low-cost FPGA devices suitable for edge applications. The proposed methods emphasize;more BRAM space made available for tiled processing, acceptable image quality with PSNR gains where possible, and scalability for integration into a full SWINIR hardware pipeline. This work will also focus on implementing and validating the complete system on a small FPGA, demonstrating cost efficiency and feasibility on small FPGA improvements compared to existing high-resource FPGA and cloud-based implementations.

Keywords: Image enhancement, hardware implementation, FPGA, systolic array

Room Location: CHAIR: Dr. Cajetan Akujuobi

TITLE: EDGE-NATIVE MULTI-AGENT SYSTEM FOR LATENCY-CRITICAL ANOMALY DETECTION AND QOS OPTIMIZATION IN 6G SMART MANUFACTURING

ABSTRACT: The increasing reliance on wireless connectivity in smart manufacturing places stringent demands on network latency, reliability, and adaptability that exceed the capabilities of static or threshold-based quality-of-service (QoS) control mechanisms. While 5G standalone networks enable industrial deployments, emerging 6G environments are expected to introduce greater variability, tighter latency constraints, and more frequent performance degradation events, necessitating autonomous and learning-driven control strategies. This dissertation proposes an intelligent multi-agent framework for real-time anomaly detection and QoS optimization in industrial wireless networks. The framework integrates edge-based monitoring, unsupervised anomaly detection, and reinforcement learning–driven control to enable proactive and adaptive network management. Network telemetry collected from a Firecell 5G standalone testbed is used as an empirical baseline, while a scaled 6G-emulated dataset is employed to evaluate robustness under more stringent performance conditions. Anomaly detection is performed using Isolation Forest and deep autoencoder models to identify deviations in latency, throughput, and packet loss. QoS control is formulated as a Markov Decision Process and addressed using reinforcement learning agents that dynamically adjust network parameters to mitigate detected anomalies. The proposed multi-agent system is evaluated against static and threshold-based baselines across multiple operating regimes. Experimental results demonstrate that the learning-based approach achieves improved latency stability, faster throughput recovery, and reduced packet loss under both moderate and stress-intensive conditions. The framework maintains consistent control behavior across 5G and 6G-oriented scenarios, indicating scalability and robustness under increased network volatility. These results validate the effectiveness of multi-agent, learning-driven QoS control for next-generation industrial networks and provide a practical pathway toward autonomous network management in 6G-enabled smart manufacturing environments.

Keywords: Intelligent multi-agent framework, edge-based monitoring, 5G standalone testbed, QoS, 6G, autonomous network management

Room Location: Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Conference, Room 315D

"slide_template_v7":"
[1296
post-8749","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-main-events","cat_main-events
],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
https://www.pvamu.edu/graduateschool/event/candace-mike-doctoral-project-defense-thursday-may-28-2026-1100-am-central-time/

COMMITTEE CHAIR: Dr. Chloe Gaines

TITLE: RECOVER WELL: REDUCING READMISSIONS THROUGH NURSE-LED FOLLOW-UP AFTER UROLOGIC SURGERY – A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

ABSTRACT: Hospital readmissions within 30 days following urologic surgeries remain a significant quality and safety concern for patients and institutions alike. These readmissions are often associated with catheter complications, infections, poor pain management, and limited patient understanding of discharge instructions. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate whether implementing structured nurse-led telephone follow-up (TFU) in conjunction with standard discharge education reduces unplanned 30-day hospital readmissions among adult patients undergoing urologic surgery. Guided by the Logic Model framework, this project uses a quasi-experimental, two-group pre- and post-intervention design to compare outcomes. The project takes place at a high-volume outpatient urology clinic in Houston, TX. Adult patients aged 18 to 93 undergoing urologic surgeries in the operating room are included. The pre-intervention group receives standard discharge instructions alone, while the post-intervention group receives the same standard discharge instructions plus a structured nurse telephone call within 48–72 hours of discharge. Data is collected via retrospective chart review and prospective nurse documentation, with readmission outcomes tracked through the electronic medical record and documented on an encrypted Excel spreadsheet. The quality improvement project uses a scripted assessment of pain, catheter status, infection symptoms, hydration, medication adherence, and follow-up care. Data analysis includes descriptive statistics to summarize demographic and clinical variables, and chi-square testing to compare categorical outcomes (such as readmission rates). This quality improvement project has the potential to inform best practices for post-discharge care, enhance patient safety, and reduce healthcare utilization by strengthening patient engagement and continuity of care during the critical recovery period. Findings may also support the broader role of nurses in transitional care and reinforce the value of nurse-led interventions in high-risk surgical populations.

Keywords: Nurse-led telephone follow-up, post-discharge education, quality improvement, readmission prevention, urologic surgery

Location Online:

Zoom Link:

https://pvpanther.zoom.us/j/95875466515?pwd=AOOGF8MiGXx7N8z9nrd9LQbSNQxmQf.1

"slide_template_v7":"
[1296
post-8748","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-main-events","cat_main-events
],"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
https://www.pvamu.edu/graduateschool/event/introduction-to-evidence-based-undergraduate-teaching-course-summer-2026-june-17-august-5/
Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate Teaching Course | Summer 2026 | June 17 –
