Cassandra Chaney

“Making a Difference One Study at a Time”

Our symposium keynote speaker is Dr. Cassandra Chaney, an Associate Professor in Child and Family Studies at Louisiana State University (LSU). Broadly, she studies the dynamics of African-Americans in dating, cohabiting and marriage as it relates to relationship formation, maintenance and stability. Dr. Chaney earned her B.S. is Psychology form Southern University and A&M College, and her PhD and M.S. in Human Community Development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She is deeply interested in the representation of African American couples and families in popular forms of mass media (television shows, music videos, song lyrics). Given the unique challenges Black Americans face, Dr. Chaney provides recommendations regarding policies that can better meet the needs of Black families who battle with unemployment, incarceration, weakened family structures and racism.
