The Prairie View Trail Riders Association is a 501 (c) 3 organization and a sanction trail ride with affiliation to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It has its origins at Prairie View A&M University as the founders were Dr. E.B. Evans, Dr. A.N. Poindexter, Mr. James Francies and Mr. Myrtis Dightman, Sr. Dr. Evans was a former President of the PVAMU, Dr. Poindexter was a former PVAMU veterinarian and professor, Mr. James Francies was a community member and Mr. Myrtis Dightman, Sr. is an 8 time Bull Riding Hall of Famer.

The mission of the trail is to promote agricultural interest in young Americans, to perpetuate the ways and means of travel of yesteryear, and to preserve Black western heritage. This marks the 61st anniversary of travel by horseback and wagon to participate in Houston’s Livestock Show & Rodeo Parade. The 300 member equestrian unit will parade around the campus on Monday, February 18, 2019 at high noon and the Chili Cook-off will follow shortly after in the pasture just west of Blackshear Stadium.
